Exhaust flexi touching Sump

Post by Steve-O 2007 »

Just fitted a TB downpipe and I noticed my Motoria / JPerformance Exhaust Flexi section is touching the Sump.

Is this a problem? Im guessing it will make the oil a little warmer but considering the heat comming off the engine anyway Im guessing it wont make that much difference?

Its not meant to touch the sump, so shouldnt touch the sump, id get that sorted tbh

aswell as the issues youhave mentioned above, its likely to cause excess vibration and it will most likely knock against the sump after a while.

well its quite tight on it so wont knock. Started the car up and it seems to vibrate with the engine.

I will try and get a little spacer made up to see if it can move it down a little

Im guessign it wont add that much heat realy as when you think about it the exhaust it quite close anyway even if it wasnt touching so the heat will rise up and heat it in the same way near enogh surely?

It's definitely a problem, the whole point of having a flexi section & rubber engine & exhaust mounts is that the two parts can move independently of each other. If they're touching like that then it will impede on their movement, won't it. It makes the possibility that one will damage the other much more likely.

Would a Car Tuner / engine builder place be able to mod my flexi so it misses the sump? Never had an exhaust modded before.

Thanks :thumleft:

is the downpipe under guarantee?.if so get that part exchanged.if not you could try bending it yourself.eg,get the exhaust hot...carefully undo bolts and use a metal bar to move it away from sump...

sounds a little cowboy but just might work

just an idear!

exhaust dp is 2nd hand. I was thinking of unbolting it putting a bit of wood between the flexi and sump bolting up and going for a big run then leave to cool and remove

there should be some give in the flexi section

with the silencer off, can you try adjusting (i.e hitting) it with a mallet to re-align it away from the sump?

there should also be some give in the silencer hangers when putting it all back.

I don't have my flexi exhaust mounting any more though, as the blueflame I got had the hanger in completely the wrong place.

still, most s/s systems are far lighter than the stock set up. I also have a decat with bracket.

I have put some wood between the flexi and sump so hopefully after a week or 2 the heat will change its shape :)

At least the wood will stop it rubbing through the flexi or sump (I think the wood would wear first :) )

Will let you know what happens in a week or 2 :)

How the Hell did that fall out!!  The wood was in so tight it was curving a little but after a big hard drive its gone!!

Thats annoying because if it stayed in and cooled I bet it would have worked!!

Hopefully a lump of rubber will stay in :thumleft:

Sorted :thumleft:

Removed the Centre Exhaust bracket and That guy from from that Developments site, you know the nice guy who made these downpipes with huge flexis in, cant seem to remember his name   anyway, he sent me some downpipe flanges for free to act as spacers so with a spacer inplace and the centre exhaust bracket removed we now have clearance of about 1.5 - 2cm at the closest point
