Auto vs Manual

Hi people.

A mate is looking at a rev3 mr2 NA but its an auto box. I have never driven an auto so was wondering if i could gain some advice.

BTW he is selling his UK spec Celica GT which is a touch slower than an NA mr2 anyway.

Never driven an auto MR2 despite having only autos since selling my turbo a couple of years back.

However you might be interested to know that a 'flappy paddle' conversion has been developed for the Mk2 MR2 which is apparently very good. It's not switchable between std auto and paddles though, once converted you have to use the paddles at all times (though this may have changed by now).

Just been on the highland drive with the mr2oc and a few guys had auto's,was amazed how well they kept up and in some parts set the pace, as far as i know the auto mr2 is a very capable car and worth considering

I looked at and drove a Beams auto before getting another manual. It drove perfectly well and when it was moving it didn't hang about either, but personally it has to be a manual in a 2 seater sports car. There's nothing like thrashing it up and down the gears. Autos are great in big cars with big engines, love that kick down

I'm getting old, if I could make my MR2 turbo an auto I would !!

I'm sure they'd be a trail of gear sets and bits of casing following though !!

I recently bought a Rev3 G-Limited Auto, to replace a manual NA. Before that all my other MR2s were manual.

I love the auto box and wouldn't go back to a manual. That said, I've never really cared much about all out performance (never had a Turbo) and I prefer a more laid back driving style.

Things to be aware of:

The 'box is only a three speeder, with an overdrive. It is electronically controlled and switching on the Power button will provoke quicker kickdown and redline gearchanges at full throttle.

Despite the obvious limitations, my Rev3 Auto is more than fast enough for my needs. Compared to my wife's Mk3 MX-5 it's much faster.

A very annoying sounder comes on when you select reverse.

MPG is on par with a manual Rev3 - easy 30MPG around town. The top gear gearing with the overdrive switched on provides very relaxed cruising. How does 70MPH with the engine ticking over at 2,750 rev/min sound?

What is the quoted 0-60MPH for the auto?

All that Peter said and more. Had my Rev1 G-Limited Auto for over 2 years and love it. In thrash mode (power button) it rips about, bloody hard to hang on through the changes, I want to go up a gear before it does Not going to get 30 to the gallon round town if your playing in that mode

On another note, I would love an auto V6 in the engine bay, not a flappy paddle version either.

To my surprise, I drove a supra auto the other day and was grinning to myself at the pulsing sounder resembling a big a55 woman walking backwards !!
