[Mk2] [Generic] Fitting "poor" Border front bumper

Post by dervbas »

Having a spray job in Porsche GT3 RS "Viper" green.

Image

Prepp'd the car, everything going well.

Remove the stock front bumper... not too difficult actually.

Then hold the brand new Border front bumper (replica in fibre-glass) against the car and the sides do not fit!!!!!!

The ends of both nearside and offside wings just don't go flush with the connecting parts of the bumper! Also, bonnet closes 5mm or so above the bumper - not flush, so wind resistance will try to blow the bonnet up!

Anyone else bought a crappy replica Border front bumper from eBay and made it fit, and give me some tips?

Even pay you cash to sort it out!

unless your skilled, take it to a bodyshop, as you'll never make it fit.

This is the thing with replica Border bumpers and probably others :( made cheap in China and dont fit :(

How much did you pay for it as Im guessing it will cost probably £100 - £300+ to get it fitted sadly

I paid £180 for a smashed genuine border bumper just to make sure I had a perfect fit

Whats the fit like in the indicator holes for the indicators? I saw one once that the indicators didnt even fit (the gap was about 2cm too small!!!)

Good luck

you need to lift the front of your bumper bud.you can see from the side pic that it is not high enough as the gap for the side moulding is way to bug towards the leading edge hence does not sit flush with the bonnet.

you will have to chop/grind the sides were nescecary and am guessing that it will not lift higher due to the indicator recess also fouling on the bumper bar somewhere.

you really need to go over it all looking at were the problems areas are as you are pulling/lifting etc to know whats going wrong. But as already stated, most are a shocking fit unfortunately.

as you have already been told on this thread very rarely to replica bumpers fit straight on - a trip to a body shop or lots of paitence is required I am afraid- had exactly the same problem with my border rep.

well had a body shop fit it , on first instpection look ok ...but the edges still dont line up, the gap between the bumper and the bonnet opens up from left to right

when i respray her ill try and tidy her up a bit...the only thing i cant fix is the mouth , it also trails of down and right on the right hand side

SO your not alone but , percevear if your gunna do it yourself

my crap fitting toms front bumper took 2 weeks of hard graft to get to fit perfect. the sides didnt meet the wings, the light holes were to small and there was a massive gap between the bumper and the bonnet. i also fabricated my own lug holes from aluminum where the toblerones fix. ABSOLOUTE NIGHTMARE. would have rather paid through the teeth for a genuine one now. would of cost well in excess of £300 to have fitted and prepped at a good body shop, let alone painted.

Thanks to you all for your suggestions, and especially vinnyninja for posting the picture of his as example.

Yep, I too have it where one side the recess where the strips and toberones go on is 1cm too narrow!!!

Apart from the front that's going to a bodyshop, the rest of the car looks great. The old rev1/2 spoiler holes have gone now; just rev5 combat spoiler looking OEM :o And finally the crappy horrible black side bump strips have gone and its all colour coded! :D:

love the colour mate, so much better than the typical bright green jobbies,

black wheels would set it off a treat!

Booked in Wednesday 6th May to a proper body shop to have the bumper made to fit and look good. £300 though :(

Oh well, I've always wanted a full Border kit so it'll look nice when its done! :D

Looks good mate.i like the colour!!

I have a Border front and its not perfect but it will do for the time being.
The only thing i think your car needs is the rear grill where the exhaust is pushing up bud :thumleft:

Where did you get your spoiler from and how much??

Get this BiGWiLlYsTyLe,

I got this genuine Toyota "combat spoiler" free from a regular customer when I was working part time in a late shop!

He was a body designer or summut and had it lying around the workshop and offered it me for a packet of 24 Royals Red!!!!

Not bad huh?

I've just got my car back from bodyshop and parted with £300+VAT!!!

Looks really good now, and I'm very impressed. They have made it fit with bolts so it can be removed if necessary and put back on exactly the same!

Pictures to come soon after my 'guy' sprays the bumper over where they've had to cut away at the sides.
