Is it time to sell up????

Post by craizeeboyuk »

Been thinking about moving on from my tubby for a few weeks now. I still love the car to death but what with insurance costs, fuel and the rapidly falling value's of 2's at the moment I'm starting to think about getting rid.

Been offered a nice Clio 172 cup in a straight swop.........but do i do it?

I keep thinking yes but then look outside and see her sitting on the drive and remeber why i love her.

Drive the clio, then get back in the MR2 and you'll soon have come to the right decision ;)

Just work out what you think you'll save on fuel over a year and the insurance.... is it really that much? How many miles a year are you actually doing in the tubby? As for values going down, well it's only an issue if you sell so by doing so you're making it an issue.
Personally I reckon it's a better financial proposition to keep a reliable car and maintain it well than it is to go through say 3 other cars in the same time period and lose money on each one with depreciation.
There's all that to be considered and then as has been said throw in the difference in the driving experience.... I reckon when you add it all up you'll be staying in the MR fold.

I've lost more money in my BMW in 10 months than 10 years ownership of the MR2 !!!

Car markets on its ar5e at the moment.. good time to buy, bad time to sell !!

Clio 172's not a bad car... hasn't got the get up and go like the MR2's... or the looks.. but is a cheap quick runaround. :D

Well my thinking is that i'm now gonna be doing more miles and i get about 13mpg from the tubby. Plus if i do look to change again the 172 would prob be an easyer car to shift on. Also yes my 2 has been faultless upuntill now but i get the feeling it's gonna start costing more and more to keep going where as a 03 plate clio with fsh might not.

I'm really torn on this one but as has already been said, I think i'll drive it and see. As long as it's fun i think i'll tske it as i don't really need nearly 300bhp everyday.

Have you never owned a French hatchback before?
My twenty-year-old, 120k mile Mk1 has been more reliable that the nine-year old 70k mile clio I had before. That thing couldn't last more than three months without something falling off

  13?!?!

I've got a rev3 turbo and I have once got 175 miles to a tank which was basically an entire tank on boost. I have also got 350 to a tank if it's all motorway miles cruising at 80ish off boost. That equates to 14.5mpg when ragging the absolute hell out of the car, and nearly 30 when driving sensibly.

Maybe you just need to drive a little bit less mental :)

yeah 13. Thing is when i've got power i have to use it. I can't see the point in having a quick car and not going quick so it's high boost everywhere. That's why the 172 seems good to me as it's still quite quick, should put a smile on my face but at lower speeds and using less fuel.

Also i have a mate who's a Renault tech so servicing/fixing should be cheap.

Trouble is i've just been out to the shops in the tubby and the smiles per miles are amazing, so i'm really torn. I know what ever i do i'll regret it at some point. My heart says MR2 and my head say 172 ](*,)

I live in Milton Keynes, and because it's all roundabouts you've got lots of stop -> start -> boost up to 70ish -> slow -> stop etc etc. It really hammers the fuel consumption. But most of the time you realistically can't do that due to traffic (not each road between roundabouts is a dual carriageway for example, or slower traffic overtaking etc). Even when venturing out onto the nice A roads we have in this area there's usually too much traffic to drive in the style required to use that much fuel... and once you're up to a reasonable speed you don't use it much! Plus if you combine that with driving the last few minutes or so off boost so that you don't crack your engine when you turn it off (unless you have a turbo timer) and being well behaved through residential areas etc I really don't see how you can go through every tank of fuel at 13mpg...

Maybe I'm just being naieve ;)

Well thank you lukem for your help in this matter

My car is a very good order thanks and due to work most of my driving is late at night/early in the morning on nice clear country roads, bypasses or motorways. Yes i like to drive fast and that's why I've got a tubby but i don't think I'm a spastic or lethal.

I'm quite sure if i drove a little slower i would get more than 13mpg and sometimes I do, but as I've said, for me owning a fast car is about driving it quickly.

But maybe I should listen to lukem and buy a push bike and become a nun. Or maybe if your not willing to offer helpfull advise to a simple question you should mind your own.

Personally even if your absolutely caining through every tank of fuel at full boost you should be getting more than 13mpg.

I would get your car checked over you either have some silly power mods of something isnt working properly like the Lambda sensor.
