MR2 Drifting set up?

Post by Mr2_NA »

Can they be made to be a drift car?

After reading this months redline I am indeed hooked on drift!

Looks amazing. Would love to get into it, but stick with a 2.

Should I just buy an RX7 turbo and use that?

Or is it possible even with the weight balance to keep it sideways round a corner with the right set up. :thumleft:

I know they like going sideways unintentionally in the wet with too much throttle. But it just doesnt feel like a controlled slide like my scoob used to be.

Should I go to a track day and have a play on the airfield?

Dont bother... too much of a handful.. plus unpredictable changing directions. The snap oversteer is mucho entertaining....

Either be very heavy on the tires or heavy on the qtr panels !

Just my opinion of course. :thumleft:

Im not a fan of the 200, there's a few boys over here that have extremly nice ones with power to put £50k cars to shame. So no.

Quite likes the Silvia actually :thumleft:

So... RX7 & Silvia are on my ebay list now \:D/ Think the silvia may be the more sensible option as they seem to be cheap!

What engine would I want in it? Not too hot on wats good n bad with nissans

Agreed. Volvo 340/360s (no such car as a 380) can be made to drift very well. I've seen one in action and for an old granny car, it was very impressive.

Whilst it is possible to drift a MK2 you'll need a fair amount of talent because the balance of the car is not very good. It's not a car that is very well suited to drifting.

Best bet for drifting is front engined RWD with an LSD (of course). S13/S14s are barges and have a crap stock suspender setup. I've drifted S13s and whilst it's fun they are not all that IMO unless you spend a lot of money sorting the suspension out. Should be cheap-ish to buy so maybe a viable option and no doubt a popular choice, especially so if you can find one that's well sorted for drifting. Try the driftworks forum.

An AE86 is great fun though you need some skill to keep it going due to a relative lack of power, good fun to drift though but expensive to buy.

A 3 series (obviously with LSD) is not a bad option. I had a stock E36 325i with factory LSD and took it out round Angelesey for a laugh was an absolute hoot and very easy to hold at any angle you would want. Cheap to buy too.

An RX8 is very well balanced and you can put that at pretty much any angle of choice I found and hold it without too much trouble.

An RX7 will be an utter money pit, so best avoided in that respect I think.

You could try 'tramp' drifting in a 340 volvo but would you really want to be seen dead in one?

Cheers Lauren :thumleft:

I don't fancy tramp drifting, but feel it may be the sensible option to get into the sport before I spend £3k on a car.

Hmmmm, volvo's, if I can get one with elec windos n heated seats i'd be a happy hobo drifter  Like the sound of a 3 series, quite a few 05 reg's over here going for under £4k with less than 50k on clocks and taxed and DOT tested. keep a look out anyone for a tramp car for me :)

Will see how i get on with the 2 at the next free track day.
