Tyre sizes on 17 inch wheels

Post by tiny big »

I have been looking at a set of alloys off and mr2 turbo which are for sale locally. The rear rims are 9x17 and have 255/40x17 tyres on which need replacing. The front rims are narrower with 205/40x17 tyres which have some life left. What size does everyone recommend for the rear considering the width of the wheel rim, cheers -JON :thumleft:

to be honest i wouldnt go as wide as 255, in my opinion i would use 235 or 245 at a maximum

ive got 235 on my wide rears and 215 on the front

sounds like he just went to an extreme

I reckon it depends how you want the car to feel. I'm on 15s with standard 225s on the rear and a 205 front. It's a bit more neutral than with a 195 front but then I don't like a lot of (any!) understeer. I know you can alter it all with geometry anyway but it's tricky to get right and can be expensive unless you can do it yourself
I'd keep the gap therefore to either 20 or 30 mm depending on how you want it to behave.

235 on a 9inch rim? Must look as stretched as the 215 on the 8 <- which I also run. You still enjoying the RS2's then?

They arent stretched at all bud.....pretty flat faced with the wheels. Looks good, but defo wont be losing any tread at all to the ground...feels really good! RS2's feel brilliant! Especially in the damp now compared to before!

I had 205'40's on the rear of my 9" wheel on my corrado! Talk about stretch :O

Managed to get a pair of 255/40x17 pirelli p-zero rosso n3 tyres for the rear wheels and then fitted them .It looks awesome from the rear and to my surprise the back end does break loose when giving it large but slides slowly and is easier to control than before .I may play about with the rear pressures to help it
