Re: Removing Sound Deadening Material

I found it closer to 15kg, and that ~1.5% weight saving is significant enough when its costing you £0 and just a days worth of effort. You can't get a return like that anywhere else without spending significant money.

Roll cage - speak to Andy Robinson Racecars http://www.robinson-race-cars.co.uk/ since you aren't too far away, they are based near Basingstoke on the Reading road. They produce some of the best roll cages and fabrication you'll ever see. Strong enough to barrel roll at 210mph on a drag strip (there...

Re: oil pressure

if it is genuinely that low and you've driven it then you'll have already done the damage. if its right at the bottom (as in not rising at all) then its probably more likely a fault with the gauge.

doubt its the seals leaking. its normally water getting in underneath the seals that leaks in, or past the windscreen. in those cases, changing the seals with make zero difference. so I'd have a look at the guide on here for removing and resealing the "brackets" underneath the seals that t...

Re: Fully Synthetic Engine Oil

engines dont remember their history. changing oil is of no major significance. if you've run on bad oil and not changed it regularly then chances are wear will be higher, but thats the only effect. if the car has had its oil changed regularly and run decent quality oil, then upping to higher quality...

Re: Hen's Teeth, Rockinghorse Poo, and Mk1's?

When you think about how few AW11's you see around on the roads now this isn't actually that surprising. Especially since they aren't "special" enough to just be weekend cars for most people, I'll bet the majority that are taxed are used on a daily basis, wheres cars like the MGB you see l...

Re: Stupid Question Time

if you're not balancing the crank then theres no point in balancing the flywheel either. they should be balanced as an assembly and referenced to do it properly. if the crank isn't balanced then a balanced flywheel isn't of any real benefit. it will be close enough from Fidanza not to bother.

Re: weller wheels

you could do it with aftermarket calipers though. the stock ones are beefy, but if you had say a WMS caliper on there but with stock sized discs, you'd still have plenty enough braking power for an MR2, and the 13's should fit over easily. there are some significant advantages, the main ones being l...

Re: Car Wax/Polish. Any advice on whats best????

It is worth noting that everyone has their own preferences on products. Personally I use Chemical Guys for everything apart from polish (I use their pads though), for which I use Sonus. But everyone will have their own preferences. It is the method that is more important really as there are lots of ...

Re: Car Wax/Polish. Any advice on whats best????

I wouldn't say T-cut is even that abrasive really. For old car paint you have to be pretty abrasive to cut it back to good paint if you want it to look good and have any kind of shine. Especially on red MR2's!!!!! They are horrendous for oxidisation. Personally I've got a DA polisher, bought a packa...

Re: Strut Braces..

I'd go for the steel CDS tube every time. No engineering justification required, its just "stronger". If aluminium was in any way suitable then it would be used for roll cages. Whether it works out stronger vs mass when compared to steel, the fatigue issues will always make steel a safer o...

Re: Strut Braces..

To be fair Adam is right. If you were going to engineer a strut brace to the optimum level of performance, then a key consideration would be that it should be lightweight, whilst still being just strong enough to perform its job. Obviously we aren't talking F1 here, so you would still want it to las...

Re: Strut Braces..

Its just fabricated brackets that bolt to the strut towers (using the top mount nuts), and then a solid aluminium bar that runs across the bay and bolts to the brackets on either side. Amazingly it doesn't foul on anything at all if my memory serves me correctly. The only drawback I think is that y...

Are they all running KYB's because they perform better or because they are cheaper though?

I'm not going to go there on the rest of the discussion, I'll just agree to disagree lol. It's one of those debates that will never end.

Re: Front Suspension Modifications ?

Budget is always the reason. It does beg the question of where else corners get cut though. £200 saved on cutting springs, a component which, if it failed on say the entry to Paddock Hill Bend at Brands Hatch, could result in death for the driver, other drivers, spectators, etc. Hell, an MR2 cleared...

Re: Front Suspension Modifications ?

I don't understand race cars running cut springs. I can get custom springs made to any fitment and rate, so they could just get a spring made up that does the desired job. It doesn't cost as much as people might expect either. There really isn't any justifiable reason for cutting springs, except for...

Ive got a Paul Woods rear strut brace sat around somewhere. Had it fitted to my old car for a few years, never bothered to fit it to my new one. Would part with it if you're interested. Drop me a PM if you are. Its just fabricated brackets that bolt to the strut towers (using the top mount nuts), an...

Re: Front Suspension Modifications ?

25-30mm is pretty much the standard drop of the majority of lowering springs for the AW11. So for the sake of being cheap you're better off doing it properly and buying some springs intended for the purpose. The stock springs are too soft, so even though removing a coil will stiffen them up slightly...

Re: AW11 Coilovers..

if all you want is to lower it loads then it doesnt much matter what you run on. low most definitely doesnt offer the best handling or performance, so if you want to do it cheaply you might just as well remove the bump rubbers and cut your springs. it will drive horribly but it will sit on the deck....
