Update- bought a pair stainless 4.5" diameter exhaust baffles and fitted them this evening. Have reduced the volume considerably both outside and inside the car. Still has a nice low note to the exhaust and isn't excessively farty. Ideally I'd hook up an EGT sensor to monitor any adverse effect...

Also check the heater matrix return hose - the one that has a metal pipe that goes over the starter motor and has a hose attached to it that then passes behind the exhaust heat shield- remove your air filter for easier access. If it's that it's an easy fix (compared to HFH!)

I find they need a prybar with a sturdy pipe or block at the fulcrum to help keep the direction the force is being applied to as parallel to the axle as possible. Head off and positive news- cheap head gasket (not MLS) had been used when previous owner rebuilt the engine, has failed massively. Bores look clean and happy with no signs of cracks at all (phew!). In the process of stripping the engine down, noticed numbers stamped on the head.

Noticed some numbers stamped on the head at the corner nearest to the clutch slave cylinder. Reads 11678. I'm hoping that's not the thickness after a previous skim and 116.78mm!
