[Mk2] [Turbo] Take a look at this gearbox.. leaking?

Post by TheRoadWarrior »

Hi all, just got this gearbox from GTSChris. Its supposed to be from a rev4 turbo and has what was advertised as (and looks like) a trd diff inside.

However when i examined it the casing looks stained with oil around the lower join. Now chris says the box was fully roadtested and is fine, but i've seen another box that leaks a little from this join and its stained in a similar manner. The oil has obviously been there a while as its quite engrained with grit/gunk. It doesnt look to be coming from the axle seals. I cleaned the drain plug area which is why it looks cleaner.

What i dont want to do is chuck this box on and end up with a leak that will require complete dismantling of the box to fix. (The lower join is sealed with gasket sealant and needs the box to be stripped down to get to)

Any thoughts from people who've installed/worked on boxes- what should i do?

im not too amazingly geeky on gearboxes etc, but it might be from the cam cover gasket or head gasket from the old car leaking down onto it, making it look like its from the gearbox.

My cam cover gasket leaks and drips onto my gearbox.... duno if this helps you much tho :-k

that could be right, the usual cam cover or the dizzy seal that tends to go over time.

all you can do is split the box and re-seal it.

cheers karam

It'll be driveshaft seal or crankshaft seal
