[Mk2] [NA] 42 mpg ! woo hoo !

Post by MID LIFE CRISIS »

Took a trip today from Coventry to Chesterfield to see the folks. Filled to the brim at Tesco with their 97 octane, drove there, M6- M69- M1 at a steady 70mph apart from approx. 7 miles at 50mph threw road works. Arrived, 75 miles later, with the gauge just under full. Did return trip and the gauge was just under 3/4. Back to Tesco and filled up again to the brim, took £18.00 or 15.80 litres. By my calculations of 16 (litres) divided by 4.5 (litres in a gallon) = 3.55 gallons. 150 (miles) divided 3.55 (gallons) = 42 mpg !!! WOO HOO !!!!! \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

Yep, some of it's b0ll0x, but it's also worth a read, just to see the extent that some people go to, in order to get decent MPG!

wept! The most I ever had I think was 36mpg. I was driving VERY slowly. IIRC it was either heavy rain or snow on the motorway.

You must have been downhill, with tailwind, being towed by a car creating a huge slipstream...

You sir, are a liar!

42mpg from any NA 2.0 litre engine is awesome going. At best I can get 46mpg from my 1.4litre Civic.

I doubt a tubby could get 42mpg even if you did 45mph in 5th gear with a tail wind.

Sorry to disappoint, but doing that calculation on such a small amount of fuel used isn't going to wholly accurate, unless you literally have fuel dripping out of the filler pipe - even then you'd have to make sure you spill the same amount

Try these a greater distance (my NA, with Mongoose + Apexi filter around 6 months ago)...

The whole lot was done on a (painful indicated 60mph  ) run from Wakefield (near Leeds) to Edinburgh and back. And pics taken during pitstop toilet breaks

No mate, was 97 octane. There was either 95 or 97, it was on the nozzle too.
Super Unleaded (97 octane) at £113.9 per litre. I think the 95 was £109.9 per litre.

 Maybe i should have closed both windows and the sunroof for less drag too lol ! :sunny: Abit too warm for that yesterday though :sunny:

One of my cars is an AX diesel, it will do 90mpg. If you look on wikipedia, someone one managed 105mpg in one. I use it for work as I get paid 40p per mile. Run it on veg oil as well - had to get a Bosch injector pump to do that though.

wikipedia quote

"This technology came from the PSA Peugeot-Citroën / Renault / French government ECO 2000 project. In 1989 a naturally aspirated diesel AX, using the 1360 cc all aluminium alloy TUD engine, managed a figure of 2.7 L/100 km (87 mpg–U.S. / 105 mpg–imp), totalling over 1,000 miles (1,609 km) from Dover to Barcelona. This was the longest ever distance travelled on 10 imp gal (45.5 L/12.0 US gal) of fuel and earned it a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the most economical production car."

I never could work out hpw much MPG I get. I usually work on either a 20 quid note or a full tank.

I get 140 to 150 miles on a twenty. That sound about right for an N/A? I was getting 160 before the fuel crazyness.

I thought I was getting brilliant mileage out of my turbo 200 miles and not even reached half a tank!

Then I forgot that 90% of my instrument cluster has stopped working apart from the speedo for some reason. #-o
