BMW 335i...are there two variants?

Post by Chr15py »

Driving home from work today and thought I'd go for a nice spirited drive. So there I am, giving my car some beans when I catch up with a new shape BMW 335i - very nice looking car, 2 door coupe...yum! Looks like this...

So, he notices me and drops the hammer - kind of guessed he did as he started to accelerate off. I thought right, lets see what it's got...answer, not much! I was really shocked. My car isn't amazingly powerful, I have 286bhp but was gaining on him in every gear and at a certain point over took him. I indicated to go to the tip to dump my old battery and he flashed his headlights and carried straight on.

Is there more than one 335i - meaning a N/A one and a twin turbo? I thought he would pull away from me but I was forever gaining on him. It would be the same as if myself and Fozzy Rev3 (a workmate with approx 340fly) had a 40+ side by side, he just pulls away...not left standing but enough to have a few car lenghts in a few seconds (if that makes sense).

Evo magazine said it is as quick as the old M3 - I almost feel cheated as it didn't put up much of a fight. Has anyone else had a run in with one of these? Cheers
Chris

Two versions, but both appear to be the same

Although I do suspect some typo there, all M Sport versions are around £2.5K dearer of the normal SE. Except for the 335d which is £10 cheaper :-k

Hmm interesting. This is a car that got my attention being 3.0 24v twin turbo. Thought in years to come it could become a bargain as the M3 will keep the price of the 335 down.

I wonder why at 300ish bhp and already moving it was noticably slower :-k

maybe beat a standard rev3 midrange but if you up your boost so the mr2 has the same bhp then the mr2 will leave it....the mr2 is around 350kg lighter :-k

0-100 in 12.7 and takes over 28secs to hit 140

I have to say, I get to 140 way faster than 28seconds so if that was the case, I am disappointed. I get to 100 in 13 secs though...

I did get the chance against a new shape M3 on friday night at 2 in the morning and I got absolutely spanked! No competition for him at all but he was up for humoring me which I thought to be cool :D. Sounds amazing!!!!

Maybe that was the case...but why would he only half throttle if he's blatently putting his foot down? As far as things go, he may have more bhp but it is heavier and it works out about the same bhp/ton.

All I can say is he was trying (he aknowledged me before I turned off) so I was a little shocked - by no means a slow car but slower than I was expecting.

I'd quite happily race your dad if you like...

I've seen a couple of these on forums chipped to about 385bhp IIRC.

I'm sure some tuners will be seeing some seriously silly figures in the not too distant future.

had one of these (well 335d saloon) stuck up my a hole all the way home today. 30mph zone and he was sitting about 1 meter from my rear bumper, get to 60mph zone and I shoot off to 60 - 65, look in my mirror and hes still sitting 1 meter off my bumper, WTF did he want lol. I didnt want to race, it was wet and bendy bumpy roads... Anyway got stuck behind a car going 40mph in the 60 zone and he was still 1 meter off me so I thought fook this and overtook the car in front when it was clear and the BM didnt even attempt to follow... What a complete idiot, fair enough if I was traveling at 40mph on the 60 road but sitting right behind someone at 60 - 65mph is just stupid...

Im guessing he didnt try to overtake me because he was probably in 2 minds wondering if he had enough power or not get past me.

Maybe its because how the car looks people just want to race it....

Sounds to me like just one of the many total pr1ck drivers out there. What worries me - and I experience this every day on my commute - is that it's often pretty well off, so therefore obviously intelligent, people in expensive cars. I don't think they distinguish driving from walking briskly down a busy street. And they normally aren't looking further ahead than the car directly in front of them (usually no more than 5m away)

I tap my breaks repeatedly of someone drives that close to me. Tossers.

hi every1 i currently work for bmw and the 335i is a quick car but the mr2 is so much lighter which is why you wasted him. there is only 1 engine performance variant, as listed by another member. if you see a 135i then see how you get on. a lighter car and sound awesome, much prefer the mr2 though what a drivers car

Can't believe people aren't thinking about weight here, this thing weighs 1600 kg and theres like between 300 and 350kg more than a rev2 tubby. That is some serious weight, no wonder you wasted him. I don't have any doubt I could pull away from one either.

Rev 1/2 Turbo = aprox 200bhp (220 is bs believe me)
200bhp / 1.3 (1,300 kgs) = 153bhp per ton.

BMW 335i = 305bhp and weighs 1,600 kg's

305 / 1.6 = 190 bhp per ton.

Do not start with "yeah but my tubby is 787,000 bhp. It's only fair to compare standard Vs standard or modded vs modded.

Oh and just for arguments sake. Rev 3 turbo 245 bhp / 1.3 ton = 188 bhp per ton.

I think that puts it to bed now.
