6 paddle sprung disk or normal clutch disk?

Post by Paul R »

Hi,

I've got a 6 pluck sprung clutch for my tubby. I've just been speaking to a mate though and he thinks that the car wont be very good for day to day driving and I should have got a normal uprated clutch.

Has anyone got one of these clutches? How long do they last? Will it be useless for driving in traffic etc?

Cheers,

Paul.

Paul,

Who made the clutch and what compound is it?

I've driven friends cars with Helix competition and fast roads clutches, and both were driveable at low speeds in traffic - but teh clutch could bite hard.

I'm not sure. the spec is as follows:

6 Pluck copper ceramic spring disc

Heavy duty duel diaphragm 35% uprated cover assembly

NSK release bearing included in kit

Alignment tool included

Lightweight design.

I have a 6 pluck srung disc clutch on my rev 3 turbo, its good for 450hp, I find it fine to drive, first gear takes abit of getting used to as you dont get as much control as a standard disc/pressure plate setup, but i find the pedal action very light, lighter than stock anyway.

Unsprung discs are worse, tho ive never driven one

its a copper ceramic compound.

I have found the 6 pluck is more driveable than the 4 pluck helix clutch i used to have, not quite as much on/off.

Paul, Trickster has the exact same clutch as you.

I've still got my top notch Helix in mine... Some 30K+ miles later and its still fine, still bites terrific. Never slipped, never caused a problem. It is a bit on and off, but you get used to it.. and when you drive everything else, you then think how crap other clutches are !

Of course you have to change your driving style, you can't ride the clutch much or you'll have nothing left in a short space of time.

Hi,

so how do you have to adjust your driving style to get the maximum life out of the clutch?

rev and let the clutch out quicker?? (dump the clutch? :D)

Kinda difficult to explain, generally never ride the clutch and to pull away, you can let the friction plate burn a little ( biting point ), but due to the contact friction quality, the plate will bite relatively quick...! You will be prone to stalling it a few times, but you'll get use to it... between gearcharges in particular, you'll feel the clutch bite strong in either types of clutches. Of course, less mechanical friction loss between these clutches and the stock one.

Rev and dump, not as bad as it sounds.
