Hi Jim, when its out its out. Just wondered about how long to go out when cold ? Cheers.
Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Info please ! Oil pressure light
literally flicker 2 to 3 times and go out..

Doesn't flicker, engine cranks over, fires up and ticks over, 1 to 2 secs and light goes out. When warm it will go out straight away. Maybe the wrong oil has been used and it's too thick ? Really don't want to damage internals though !
Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Info please ! Oil pressure light
goes out more or less straight away, is your oil level low if so i think this might cause that and what you said oil might be a little thick

Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Info please ! Oil pressure light
Lower oil pressure readings would result if the oil is thinner, not thicker.
The oil flows from the sump, via the pump and oil galleries through various bearing surfaces and back to the sump. If the bearing clearances are wide (worn engine) or the oil is thin (e.g hot) then there is less resistance to the oil flowing through the bearings, and consequently less back-pressure.
THe maximum oil pressure is regulated by a pressure relief valve. THere is no point in having higher than needed oil pressure- it just promotes leaks.
At high revs the crankshaft rotation causes a cenrepetal pumping action which removes oil from the big ends. The oil pump must provide enough flow to maintain the oil film within the big end bearings at maximum revs. A greater flow rate will have some cooling benifit, but will waste power

Re: [Mk2] [Generic] Info please ! Oil pressure light
Don't mean to worry you here but my old N/A used to take 2-3 secs for the oil light to go out. This was bad oil pressure due to a worn bottom end. It also used a lot of oil. You could hear mine knocking slightly when cold though (you say yours is quiet). It should really go out within half a sec or so.

My brand new build took about that time to go out, and also for good pressure to build on the gauge. Nothing to worry about if you ask me.
There is never instant pressure in the system.

After reading through this post i had exactly the same scenario and was worried myself checked te oil level at lunch it was getting down to the low level so quick trip to halfrauds and a swip of my trade card 1 liter of oil came down from £11 to £7 half a liter in drove back to work checked the level then left it for the afternoon 4 and a half hours later cold start couple of flickers on crank then straight out
thanks guys
