[Mk2] [NA] Tubby owners read it and weep

Post by JohnnyC »

:D

Trip up to Scotland over the weekend, brimmed up with Shell V-Power before setting off.

Today on journey back, fuel light came on, could've easily kept going to break into the next 100mile barrier on the tripometer but wasn't sure how far I was from the next service station so played it safe.

Trip read 471.2 miles*, and I averaged 47.86mpg (beating my previous record of 46.72mpg).

Was hard work, and spoiled a little by queues on the A1(M) due to accidents etc. Was glad to fill up and not care about fuel economy though

Have photos of the fuel guage & trip at various points, but can't get them from my phone yet...

*edit, added the 'miles' bit in incase anyone thought it was kilometers :)

Mmm....bet that was a fun trip. Just shows what you can achieve though.

I used to get 27-30mpg on a trip myself in my tubby (300bhp-ish) driving it at *ahem* above the optimum speed for economy, so they're not bad at all if decently set up.

That is very good! I could never get that.

Dad drives a corvette and got 35mpg on the run back from Le Mans last year :thumleft: I dont think we can manage 1300rpm at 70mph!

I got 38mpg in my tubby from london home. I managed 45mpg in my gen6 celica gt but that was at 55mph on a space saver from 100 miles.

I bet your foot must have been itching to floor it :)

47.86 mpg is some going. I`ll not be trying to beat it though
I find I get 25 - 27mpg, when not trying to be economical or thrashing around
I think thats great. :) I only get 18-22 mpg in the rex :(

Well I did say to myself "never again" the last time I drove at 60mph constantly.

Not 'alf, well I reckon I easily got well below 30mpg after I'd filled up and had done with my science experiment

Well it was an exceptionally long journey (although going so slow made it all the longer  ), but it's probably saved me £20 by doing so - to put towards the PS3 game fund \:D/ Anyway, Micra's are for girls, it's a Yaris for me

I would like to try it in the tubby sometime. I can easily get 300 miles from a tank with the engine sat at 3,500rpm (*0 mph) with a few sprints along the way. I reckon I could get 400 miles from 60mph on a whole tank, must try it one day :eye:

^^ but you dont get the speed of a tubby every day :)

The turbo is fairly economical if driven steadily, you look at modern 2ltr N/As, they only get mid 30s generally.

Thing the steady and turbo is a harder concept than it sounds :D

i agree, i find it almost impossible not to have a play every now and again, but even in my rev1 which has always overfueled slightly (getting to the bottom fo it though :D) i can do around 300 to a tank

not seen much more than 300miles out of a rev1 na before. but then its not been driven to get the most mpg out of it ever.

i count myself lucky if i get more than 220miles out of a tank in the NA.

NA owners: read this and weep:

240bhp + LSD

Seriously though, 48mpg is flippin amazing for a 2.0l. Was it running on 2 or something?! My best in my 1.4 Civic is about the same.

Now reward yourself for this amazing economy and see how few miles you can get to a tank by driving it like it was meant to be driven

I dont get more than 250 miles to a tank driving on the motorway at speeds between 65-90. I spend alot on fuel!

Well said that man. I didn't buy my turbo for economy, although I have managed over 360 miles on about 7/8 of a tank :)

Ha ha I doubt that - flooring it in the NA generally results in very little goping on other than a lot of noise, particularly in the higher gears when cruising on the motorway.

When I had my tubby it was hard to keep driving sensibley when a clear patch of motorway opened up.

The REV5 I have now however lends itself well to economical driving as even at full pelt on the motorway it feels tame. Still a great car on the twisties though!

I reckon you've just got teeny-weeny wheels on the back so the speedo thinks it's travelled further than it actually has

Seriously, though, that's quite an achievement!

Standard ECU or not?
