[Mk2] [Turbo] revs shoot up and the engine is left trying to catch up.

Post by GGilbert_MR2 »

I'm having this problem where if your lowish revs in 3rd gear and above and you floor it, the resv rocket up and it sounds like the engine is then trying to catch up.

I have had a brand new 399ftlb clutch fitted and lightweight flywheel, but the problem still persists?

I'm due to have it mapped in the next 3 weeks, whether that will sort it i've no idea.

Any ideas?

Looks a lot like slipping clutch to me!

But if you have a new clutch... Could it be slipping tires? :clown:

Well, I would take it back to whoever fitted your clutch to give it a check.

surely it can't be clutch or flywheel related.

Any other ideas?

hello mate

you say the revs rocket up, and the engine is trying to catch up.

Do you mean the revs rise and the car's speed then catches slowly up?

If so, this is the exact symptom I had with my slipping clutch. It was more noticable at higher speeds say, 3rd and 4th, than pulling away in 1st.

I would definitely be paying whoever fitted your clutch a visit.

I had a 399ft-lb RPS clutch fitted not long ago, and it doesn't slip an inch. Quite the opposite in fact - I reckon the engine mounts will be gone in a few months...

That is correct Ian.

I was having this problem before the new clutch and now having it fitted with a lighter flywheel i was hoping the problem would dissapear.

I have just had the exact same clutch fitted you have.

I was hoping it would solve my problem buying a better and stronger clutch and mine is the RPS from xxxx.

Wanna get this sorted as the car sounds poo, when you try and floor it.

is it jsut after u change gear?

or

do u change gear, leave it a few mins then boot it??

sounds like either clutch master or slave cylnder seals are reversed and there not returning as they should?

It's when the you've been in that gear for a little whiole then floor it.

Others have said the same, will give that a whirl tonight.

Thanks

ok no problem, can you drive the car without a clutch? what i mean is are you experienced to drive the car from start to finish without a clutch,

i.e setting off on the started then going through the gears?

if you are disconnect the slave cylnder so there is no pressure on the clutch release shaft/bearing and see what happenes

Simmo490 do you mean the old school method of gear changing before syncros came in? i.e. just feeling the gearstick into place and slipping it in to the correct gear at the right RPM?

I think the previous owner has adjusted the push rod from the pedal to the master cylinder to give the clutch a higher biting point... this was ok on the worn clutch but with new flywheel and clutch its too puch pre load and is keeping the clutch depressed slightly.

Simple job to fix.

drive at 20/30mph , whack the car in 4th gear, floor it , if the rev shoot round and engine speed does not, then your clutch is fubared.

Where is your biting point, just off the floor or sky high??

Read the first post - its a brand new clutch.

Biting point is like 4" off the ground..... for sure the push rod needs to be shortened to eliminate the problem.
