Just moved numberplate and sprayed valence.

Post by midenginedmaniac »

The numberplate position had bugged me for a while and the valence needed another dusting of paint. Well please with the result.

I do like the paint job, even though I dont want another red mr2, as mine gave me nightmares.

This may be a boy-racer type thing to do, but I was thinking of replacing the front grill with chicken mesh. Can buy it well cheap from a garden nursey.

Looks great. Where was the numberplate before then?

I need to get some paint on my lower valance. It's got a few scrapes on it!

It was on the original brackets that were rusty and always made the plate look bent. Now its bolted through the front grill at a slight downward angle.

Spraying is quite easy with cans on a flat colour. I didnt even mask it up as it was down so low and there was no wind.

As for chicken wire. No. Get some proper stainless mesh. I can get it from work

A side pic so you can see how the plate is mounted to the Grill now.

Before. The plate used to flap around on the metal brackets and never look straight.

I think your new numberplate position will not allow as much airflow to the rad as the standard position, although this may not matter given that mk1's seem to have surplus cooling capacity.

I was waiting for the first one to say that.

It crossed my mind. I agree that it will have less airflow but my fan has never come on since owning it. They do seam to run cool. Im sure it will be fine.

Cheers bud. Are you going to colour code the grill and number plate surround as well?

I first removed the centre screw from the grill. Then with a longer screw attached the sprayed number plate surround. Then two more holes in the surround on each side and cable tied to the grill. Used clear silicone to hold the numberplate to the surround. :thumleft:

Rodney,
I really do love your colour codeded grill and will be trying to flatter you by using that look on my n/a (also red),
but because my SC loves the white black mix (going to have to spray my roof black as well - loved that look at JAE).
I was aiming more for your stylish look with the tilted plate

I used to have my number plate there on my sc but when i took the car on the rollers at WGT the first thing the operator did was remove my plate and told me to fit it somewhere else unless i wanted to blow the car up!

A bit extreme but i moved it wnyway and made a vinyl plate and stuck it on the bumper, i did notice a difference in running temp though only on hot days and we havent had many of them this year

I could alwat drill loads of small holes in it.

If it blows up I will let you know but Im sure I will notice the TEMP gauge before then.

The plate under the bumper is fine for normal every day type use, but on track I remove the front plate to allow extra air into the airdam/radiator.

As far as chicken wire/mesh, as said above, get the propper stuff (available from most Halfords now) if you're worried. The idea using this stuff is to stop stones from damaging the rad. A problem I've not encountered with the MK1... yet.

mine got sprayed white wheni did my respray, but last weekend i took it off and sprayed it black again, i didn't like it the same colour as rest of the car as it just looked like a lazy respray, which it was lol

loving the look but be warned u might need a friendly MOT tester, I had my plate pushed back like that on original brackets, was the only thing he could find to fail my supercharger on and wouldnt even bend down to pull it out straight (all of 2 seconds to do) to pass it, had to go away and come back for a fecking retest with a vertical plate, muppet, was one of these cheap £20 MOTs and think he thought he would get plenty of work out of an 18yo car but try as he might everything was spot on apart from plate. Needless to say I pay full price and found a brilliant MOT tester who does all my cars and if he finds a minor fail he rectifies it there and then for me!

Great look just be prepared!
