Flat Battery

Post by lffuller »

Hi everyone. Hope you can help.

Tried to start my MR2 today only to find a flat battery. This has happened before. Should I just buy another - it is about 5 years old.

Also, just to get it going can I jump start it? A friend of mine who has a classic TR6 says jump starting old cars with new ones can blow things. I know the AH of my MR2 battery is 48. I have two other cars with AH ratings of 55 and 66. Should I jump from either of them or not risk it?
Thanks for your help

jumping it will be fine, don't worry about it. Or bump start it... either is no prob.

If your battery is not holding its charge, get a new one.

Bump start it, take it for a good run then take it to halfords and ask them to stick their battery checker on it... Won't cost anything and then you'll know whether you need to change it or not.

Thanks Guys
Will have to jump start. It's in a garage down a hill at the mo, so will not be able to a push and bump start.

That'll teach me not to use the old girl for a few weeks!

batteries should be fine for a "few weeks". if its lost charge in less than a month then it needs replacing (assuming there are no dodgy connections or components sapping power from it) less than 2 months and it is probably not working to its best condition

i left my MR2 unstarted for a week this week and half expected it to be reluctant to fire when i came back to it. but it started as perfectly as normal. the owner before me didnt use it for about 6 months, his dad used to fire it up every couple of weeks to keep it from seizing up, and it seems to have conditioned the battery or something lol.

best bet is to get the battery tested at Halfords as suggested just to see if it needs replacing :)
