Skidpan Session - Interested ?

Post by BenF »

OK, I'm considering sorting out a skidpan training events later this year and thought I'd check to see what the interest levels were like.

To give you an outline :

- Two sessions would be run in a day - a morning and an afternoon session, each session being around 3 hours long. The number of people per session is TBC, but would be low enough to ensure you get a decent amount of time in driving.

Each session would include:

- A introduction to the 'theory' behind skids: their causes, correction, ABS and braking techniques, emergency manoeuvres (eg emergency lane change)

- Would include 1:1 Tuition with an instructor on the skidpan driving RWD and FWD cars.

- You would be driving their cars rather than your own MR2 on the skidpan (skidpans today don't seem to let you drive your own cars on them any longer as road tyres tend to rip up the rubber/oil surface)

Location : TBC, but would be Midlands based
Date : Would be September - November, and at a Weekend.
Cost : TBC, but expect £75-100 for the three hour session.

At the end of the day - this is the best sort of modification you can make to any car you drive IMO - a modification to the Driver.

So, anyone interested? If we're going to run it, we'd need 10 people .. If there is a lot of interest we could look to run more sessions over additional weekends.

Depends just how far away it is but if it's within reason I'd definitely be interested in this. Something I've been meaning to do for a while anyway.

Sounds interesting but I'm going to see if my IAM group are running one this year before splashing out. :)

I am interested

Do you know if there are any age restrictions for this? I am thinking it would be good experience for my 17 year old son.

Hmm, a good question. I don't believe so, but I'd expect he would probably d need a Driving Licence (eg unlike karting etc) in order to do this.

Fair enough. I spent a while ringing around all the local forces close to me (Suffolk @ Ipswich, Chelmsford, Norfolk /Kings Lynn ) about 2 years ago and found that a lot of the skidpans that Local Police Forces uses to run for their own Driver Training (and which they opened to the public a few times a year) are now closed and have been replaced by trolley setups on MOD airfields.

A real shame as IMO I think skid control / wet handling should be a compulsory part of the driving test.

I'm getting pretty good at controlling the odd slide, but I'm not going to pass up the chance to practise!

I'm happy to bring one along if they can accomodate it. I mean, it's not like they're not stuffed full of safety equipment is it?! :D

Might be worth an ask, and would give those people signed up the opportunity to at least have a go at skid control in an MR2.

i would potentially consider this (own a mk 3)

however, would want to know where it was as i would be commuting from SW

any idea what kind of a group discount we would recieve? again may make it more or less worth driving up for!
