My old Rev2 was fine on a non cat test. Post -95 cars which must have a cat test may have more of a problem.

BTW, edited your topic so it fits without txt spk ;)

My Rev 3 tubby never seems to have an issue at MOT time; gutted cat and Nur Spec exhaust, too.
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!

Here is an email I got from VOSA

As this vehicle is a 1995 model, things can get a bit complicated!

Some vehicles ‘first used’ between 1 August 1992 and 31 July 1995 do not
require a CAT test, even though these vehicles may have been fitted with a
catalytic converter from new. The MOT tester is able to identify such
vehicles by virtue of the fact that there is no exact match for the vehicle
on the exhaust gas analyser (EGA) database. This can be confirmed by
looking in the current edition of the “In Service Exhaust Emissions
Standards for Road Vehicles” book, of which all testing stations must have
a copy.

A Toyota Celica GT4, first used before 31 July 1995 falls into this
category and only requires a non-cat test (CO <=3.5% and HC <=1200ppm).
However, if the vehicle was first used after this date, it would require a
CAT test using default limits of CO at idle (450 – 1500rpm) <= 0.5%, CO at
fast idle (2500 – 3000rpm) <= 0.3%, HC <= 200ppm and Lambda 0.97 – 1.03.

A vehicles first used date is defined as being its date of manufacture, if
the vehicle was originally used without being registered in GB (e.g. an
imported or ex-HM Forces vehicle)

The onus is on the presenter of the vehicle to prove the date of date of
first use, which is usually by producing the V5c. It is possible that your
V5c shows a date of manufacture as 31/12/1995, which is the date used by
DVLA when they have no evidence to confirm the actual date of manufacture

So, because MR2 turbos dont have a UK equivalent it seems they dont require a emissions test if made before 31 July 1995

Hope this helps

does that mean ma 98 rev 5 tubby will require an emissions test then?

i still have the cat in anyway, just an aftermarket exhaust as the only mod. Shouldnt see an issue

Help please.

My tubby (1994) just failed on emissions. Aparently they could find a match with the engine number and chassis number and therefore it needed a cat to pass.

Could the database have been updated and now closed the loophole or does the MOTer rrequire a match AND a car newer than 1995?

If it is still ok to pass, where can I find proof to show him? Dont want to have to take the car to another station and pay twice!!

Thanks a lot

I did tell him that and he said that he did find a match and that was that. He said the database may have been updated and therefore it is now listed..... hmmmm.

Need to present him with some proof if anyone (or you?) can point me in the right direction. VOSA website seems like a minefield!

He is full of crap. Tell him to ring VOSA for himself. They will put him straight.

Copy and print the email I posted too and shot it to him.

first test after rebuild, past with CAT test with HKS filter and s/steel exhaust.

second test, past non-cat test with same as above but now minus a cat.

third test will be in a few weeks, but the garage I use are up on their import loopholes.

just back from the mot station,s/s downpipe with straight through system and boost at 17 psi... 0.33% vol for co and 28 ppm for hc.
limits were 3.5% and 1200 ppm

Thanks.

I have now got him to pass the car, but only because he said he used last year's In Service Book which didnt show a match.....

Think I'll be heading elsewhere next year though!!
