[Mk2] [NA] Tyre question - general opinion

Post by star_gazer »

Currently I am running
Fronts 205 50 VR 16 Yokohoma A680 T/O
and
Rears 225 45 WR 16 Pirelli P7000 TL

Fronts replaced about 15,000 miles ago and still lots of thread left, while rears replaced about 6,000 miles ago I reckon about 2,000 miles or so left :(

My heart wants to go for
Yokohama 225/45R16 89W A539 (~£91) but there are others as well
Toyo 225/45ZR16 PXT1-S 93W (~£98) or do i go for
Pirelli 225/45ZR16 R P7000 89W (~£123) or
Goodyear 225/45ZR16 EAG F1 GSD2 (~ £120)
(Price per tyre)

I hate this decision #-o

Opinions and votes please :thumleft:

Not A539's - they don't work on a Mk2 at all, horrible in the wet.

Goodyear F1 GSD2s if you can get them are by a long way the best.

I'm running Khumo Ecsta's on a set of 17's and cannot recommend them highly enough.

Probably a fair bit cheaper than the tyres you have mentioned as well considering they are top of the range for the brand.

I only use Goodyear Eagle F1's or Bridgestone SO2/SO3.

I would recommend Avon zz3s in 225/45r16 I think they cost about £80ish and they seem very good so far in all conditions

Just to add to the Mix - I used to use the Falken FK 451 (old GR-B) and that had about 80% of the grip of F1s or S03's. So, the current FK452's may be worth a look, assuming they're as good as 451's.

Dear All, thanks a lot for the input, would be most grateful if you put in more suggestions and then I will build up a list and see what can be sourced, the cheaper, the grippier and the more hard wearing the better =D>

Now more choices :-k

F1s if you are not going on track.

Other options:

Yoko S-Drives (£120ish)
Advan Sports (£125ish).
2020 GR Yaris - Circuit Pack :lover:

I have Ecsta Supra 712 205/40-17 on one of my cars (not MR2). I have done some trackdays on those too. OK in the dry for the price but does not have ultimate grip like really good tyres do. Horrible in the wet, when they start to slide they seem to slide forever before catching grip again. Grip is getting worse even in the dry when they wear down.

I wouldn't buy these again. Then again there are new Kumho models that I haven't tried but 712 is still for sale too.

I have also bad experiences with A539 but that was in small 14" size. No grip and no steering feel. Old Michelins were better even when near to the wear limits.

Thanks all for the contribution, would be grateful if you could recommend any reasonably priced/good tyre places :)
