Group Purchase - Copper Contact Distributor Caps

Post by BenF »

A few people has been asking if I'm planning to run another Group Purchase for Copper Contact Dizzy caps, so I thought I'd post here and gauge interest - if there are five people definitely interested, the group purchase will go ahead.

For those of you who haven't heard of this modification before, its basically a modification to the surface of the Aluminium contacts inside the standard Toyota provided distributor cap to bond on copper contacts.

The reason for doing this is that the aluminium contacts in the standard cap are eaten away by the action of the spark jumping the gap, and this spark also causes the formation of an insulating Aluminium oxide layer. With copper contacts, the contact isn't eaten away

With time, the amount of spark energy that goes into jumping this gap increases, with less available at the spark plug tip. This eventually results in misfires under boost.

If you take the dizzy cap off your car, you'll probably find white deposits on the face on the contact - if you scrape these off and find you've got a concave contact surface you could do with a new Dizzy cap.

Typically, its Turbo and SC cars with forced induction that suffer most from the contacts being eaten away - I have done this mod for NA cars by request, but it is not generally as much of a problem.

To give you a rough idea of price - the last Group Purchase I ran earlier this year with 20 people ended up with costs of:

Rev1 Turbo : £~63 for Cap, rotor arm and dust seal + Special Delivery
Rev2-on Turbo : £~60 for Cap, rotor arm and dust seal + Special Delivery

Mk1 NAs and SCs were a fair bit cheaper at around £35 per cap

Final prices for any Group Purchase will vary depending on numbers.

Timescales - well, the parts come in from the USA and from me ordering them they usually take 4-6 weeks before they arrive with me in the UK - and then I need a week or so to modify them all and send them on.

If people want them more quickly than this, I can get the parts from a local dealer - but parts in the UK are much more expensive than the USA (even factoring in Import duty, VAT, shipping etc) you'd be looking at £25ish more than the above prices.

If you want to have a quick look at a finished cap, and what is involved in removing / refitting the cap, I put together an installation document for a previous Group Purchase :

If you'd like a copper contact cap, please email me directly at [email protected] or reply here - if we get five or more people interested the Group Purchase will definitely be going ahead.

Any questions, post here or email me direct.

Blimey, I didn't expect this much interest this quickly, especially given its Christmas Eve - Thanks all !

Right, so far that's Eight who are interested, plus the folks who contacted me via email.

One request - if you haven't done it already, can you specify which year and revision MR2 you want a cap for, eg:

1993 Mk2 Rev2 Turbo
1988 Mk1 SC
1991 MK2 NA

etc ..

Cheers !

General plan would be this:

-I'll leave the GP open for people to join until 12th Jan '05 - then will close.
-I'll then work out the exact final costs for the different caps and let you all know - I'll then ask for people to send cheques / transfer money over to me so I can place the order
-When all the money arrives from those in the GP (26th Jan) I'll place the order.
- Parts typically take 6-8 weeks to get together for a large order (20+) but for smaller numbers they may be quicker. Worst case, they'd be with me (I'd hope) for 25th March.
- I then modify the parts and send them out in the 4th - 8th April.

I do appriciate that's a while - if people need a cap sooner and don't mind lining the pockets of MrT over here in the UK let me know and you can have a cap in 7 days or less :-)

Good to see you're doing another run of caps Ben. I was involved in the last GP and I was really impressed with how it performed. Unfortunately I lost the cap when the car went on fire in June so if you could put me down for one i'd appreciate it!

1990 Rev 2 Turbo x 1

Best advice is to take the old cap off and have a look and see what state the contacts are in - it could be someone has replaced it previously.

I did swap sparkplugs and dizzy caps at a rolling road session I did and got another 15bhp on back to back runs which suprised me. If your old cap is tired then you might benifit, but not by as much as this I'd say.

Merry Christmas :santa:
