Special coolant procedure???

Post by Essex MR2 »

Hi, sorry for this, I'm sure you've been over it before but couldn't find it in the search.

I've just read the sticker on my GTS about a special procedure for topping up the coolant and wondered what this is and if there are any other special things I ought to know about?

Cheers. 8)

Here is a link to the dark side (mr2oc), I believe you have to be a member to view this - but it's about time imoc got their how2's sorted ;)

It also seems that Toyota themselves don't know how to do this job correctly from all the stories I've heard

use toyotas coolant. dont EVER use water.

there are several bleed valves for getting rid of airlocks in the system and there IS a procedure to follow to do it, especially when totally draining and recharging the coolant.

two bleed valves are on the rad (i think) one on (near) the engine and maybe one somewhere else... so that you can bleed air of of the system (it is a BIG system after all what with the rad up front)

there is a document detailing all this but i can't remember where it is.

darn u johnny u beat me to it.

and yes, i had toyota re-charge my system and still it sometimes runs lumpy on idle. :/

Thanks, that's a top link, very handy.

Am a bit worried as the car seemed to have a small water leak and we topped it up with water, but it seemed ok, so will do a full coolant change now before it's back on the road.

Actually any glycol based coolant will do fine. It is not necessary to buy longlife at toyota prices.

Nothing wrong with using water..... as long as you mix it with a good gycol based coolant/antifreeeze.

Apparently Japanese built Toyotas have red coolant, European built Toyotas have blue coolant. But apparently it's the same!

PS. don't mix them, cos then it'll just look contaminated :D
