M3 New shape

Post by ICEMAN »

Had a little go with a friends M3 CLS (that mustard yellow colour :puker:  ) Only in 2nd and 3rd gear but it stuck to my rear bumper with no problems. He was on and of the throttle to show he had more to go so i got out the way . :( Found out it has been de-limited and has a full AC Schnitzer exhaust system its about 380bhp  Sounded great loads of induction noise :thumleft: :o

Its not a 'CLS'.... its a CSL... phillistine!!

CSL is lighter and has a carbon fibre roof plus another 20bhp or so.

Tbh i've only ever seen CSL's in black or silver. Are you sure it was a CSL?

Sorry I don,t really do German  Thats what he told me it was :-k The colour sucked IMO silver would have looked much better. I thought BMW did a M3 CLS aswell? What are they standard 3.2 360 bhp? About 5sec to 62mph :-k

i thought all the new ones were 341bhp, the csl was the one which had been stripped out and had cf bits on it. i doubt any na can gain an extra 40bhp by tuning the same engine without doing its internals

The EVO was the E36 model, not the E46 which is what we are talking about.

If you look at the E36 there is:
M3 common as M3s go - 286bhp
M3 GT very rare - 299bhp
M3 EVO. quite rare. - 320bhp (not many make this figure though)

As others have said E46 came in:
M3 common as M3s go. 343bhp
M3 CS (very, very rare) guess same as CSL.
M3 CSL (very rare) 360ish bhp
M3 GTR (rocking horse poo) >CSL powerwise, how much though i'm not sure.

Knew i was right about the CSL in black and gunmetal grey... I've seen a fair few at trackdays always in one of these two colours. ;)

the CSL had an extra 20bhp IIRC. Yes E46 stock was 343bhp IIRC.

Yep there is quite a few.

All will be quick. The E36 EVO is very quick in a straightline and no slouch round the twisties.

The E36 M3 GT has homologation parts on it, extra splitters, more power etc.

Obviously teh CSL has an edge over the regular E46 M3.

The M3 GTR is well a road going race car pretty much, even more hardcore than the CSL.

All 3 series, handle very well having a perfect 50/50 weight balance and RWD, obviously. They are in a different class from cooking vectras and the like.

I'm a big fan of the M3 CSL, which is by all accounts a superb track car (on a par with the Porsche GT3 RS). Essentially, it is a racing car that can be used on the road, whereas the M3 is fast road car.

Aside from the carbon fibre bits and other weight savings, it has a revised inlet manifold, throttle body and exhaust, all of which are bespoke. Also, it has revised suspension: wider track, faster steering (better turn-in and feel) different geometry, springs, shocks plus bigger brakes and semi slick tyres.

If you read up on it, the extra 20bhp is not the main issue. Rather, it is the way it feels and handles - so much more hardcore. It is a big step up from the standard E46 M3. Jeremy Clarkson raved about it when he tested it on the Isle of Man, He said it was BMW at its very best. 20% better than he thought it was going to be! Coming from Clarkson that's saying a lot.

I'd love to drive one. I've only ever driven it on GT4. And it is one of the best handling cars in my garage along with my tuned R33 GTR LOL. :)

I know there E36 but i'm pretty sure they do an E46 Evo, i think they call it the M3 EVO SMG. Not 100% about that though
