Temperature not right

Post by rev4ryan »

On my drive into work this morning the car acted like it had just been started all the way. The revs were slightly up around 1700 rpm at tick over and the temp gauge did not go above 1/4 of the way up the whole journey (50 miles).
Was thinking my thermostate has gone, am i right?

New thermostat isn't expensive and it's an easy job to replace, just don't overtighten the bolts as the thermo housing is alloy and can snap

They told me it was easy and I'm normally pretty useful with a set of spanners but I cant even gain access to the damn thing :(

It's on the cambelt side of the engine next to the downpipe/turbo elbow. If you take the intercooler pipes away you can see it.
It has one nut at the top which is easy to get off but another one thats really hard to get to underneith. Problem is you cant see it, only feel it and it makes it hard to get a spanner in there ](*,)

i did this a couple of weeks ago and have to say it was verry easy. Just removed the intercooler pipe and used a socket on a extension bar, piece of p1$$. both bolts are easily accessable from the top.

my rev3 turbo the thermostat is under the boost pipes so I'm thinking they match. Youwill loose some coolant but not enough to need to do a complete change. Depends on when it was last changed (coolant). Might as well do the whole lot if its been 18 months to 2 years

my moneys on a temp sender!

if its not going above 1/4 at all, then its the sensor.....cheap and super easy to swap over.....

if you temp is going up and down, then its the thermostat....not an easy job i dont think.....difficuly to get any sort of room to work out how to install it....

for piece of mind id do the temp sensor first, like £7-10 and extremely easy to swap over......

i had this problem and thermostat didnt solve it, the sensor swap did!

Be careful when talking about sensors and senders.

The temp sender sends info to the temp gauge wheras the temp sensor sends info to the ECU.

If your car is on fast idle all the time and the gauge is at 1/4 then it wont be the temp sender because that wouldnt make it idle fast.Nor would it be the sensor because that would not affect your temp gauge.

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck slightly open to me.

i had this very problem minus the high idling....thermostat did nothing....
temp sensor/sendor did solve the problem.....
the sensor with the blue plug.....one for the dash, not the one for the ecu...

not making sense jim ,He has high idling

ecu green temp sender controls the idle speed of the car
blue one JUST does the gauge on the dash

sound like thermostat to me also

or maybe BOTH senders are up the shoot
