Uprated engine mounts??

Post by Matty_GTS »

After seeing the throw of my engine on the rolling road and the fact that my downpipe cracked 3/4 of the way around i think i need to do something with the engine mounts.

The ones in there at the moment are standard and apear to be fine but i want something a bit stiffer to reduce the engine throw and also help with getting the power down.

Does anyone know where i can get them and which brands are best?

Any affiliates?

Cheers

I have the TRD ones.

You could get the poly bush inserts though. Not sure where they actually come from but speak to nutter, he's got a set and supplied Frank with a set too.

Very much so yes.

It used to rock about quite nicely, now it's been tamed a little, but could probably do with even more on mine now tbh.

You only need the front and rear mounts so don't go wasting your hard earned on side one's too ;)

Fill your own motor mounts for £10!

Going to do a how to as its asked a billion times.

Basically buy some Polyurethane from a builders merchants, Machine mart. Whip your stock mounts off and fill the mounts with the Polyurethane. Allow a good few days for them to dry prperly and harden.

The mounts will then be soild mounts and pretty much rock solid with a very small amount of flex which is exactly what you want. Did this to the rear mount on my old Mr2 and compared it to the front mount which was TRD and the TRD had more movement!

Cheap, easy, effective but a bit messy.

Cheers Bender,

This polyurethane, does it come in a liquid for then or something you mix up.

Guessin you mean lie the mounts on a surface on there side and pour it into the holes?

That about on the rite lines?

That's the idea yes, it's something i wouldn't mind doing to my TRD ones actually.

Not 100% on it but i think it comes in the same consistency as silicone.

DIY job for torque mounts: Buy a bag of this 199-1395 from RS Components (about 8 beer tokens) and it'll sort it out:

http://www.rs-components.co.uk/electron ... ndex1.html

One pack just about does both torque mounts, but dont waste any! Lay on their side, duck tape the bottom and pour it in to set, job done.

Another top tip from www.twobrutal.co.uk =D>

Personally I would not go down this route myself. Their is ment to be a degree of movement for good reason, ie to absorb vibration etc. Without some give the vibration and stress caused by the engine will simply be moved on to some where not designed to take that kind of load which in turn will cause problems!

I think it best to firm up the mounts by means of the TRD units. Solid mounts will feel like crap on a day to day road car and in truth are not needed or justifiable in anything other than an out and out track day vehicle :)

Although going down the TRD route at fensport is a mear £130!!

Looking for cheaper!

Filling them isn't going to make them solid is it? They will still have some flex surely?

Cheaper alternative, widely used:
http://home.comcast.net/~kirkosaurus2/M ... serts.html

Most of the turbo roadsters are running the Mk3 inserts with no problems other than a slightly greater amount of vibrations, but nothing huge.

Many NA Mk3's running with them in the US, too, and Mk1's, and 2's..

I only notice a difference in ride - if yuo can call it that.. when you first turn the key to start up.. the car judders as teh engine springs to life.. but it's only as it fires up - when running i don;t feel any extra vibrations..

I can;t really comment on how they feel in response to driving around with them cos my CC water pump keeps packing up - so I've not really had a good before and after experience (when Andi AM Tuning) fitted teh mounts my CC pump packed up that weekend and so had to very gingerly go home off boost..)

Andi however is in a position to comment - and i know he realy rates them - if he does then it's good enough for me - Andi's god ! :afro:
