500hp+ and 9" rims??

Post by Owen @ Kent Car Craft »

It seems as if i have purchased a barrrrrrgain set of 17" lexus splitties for my MR,
I know everyone raves about lexus wheels, then the fact they dont fit properly but i belive these will...
I'm going to need all the help i can putting ~500hp to the floor, the rears are fitted with 255 section tyres,
As the rear wheels are 9" wide, with an ET of 40,using spacers, will they clear my suspension?(albeit i'm planning on changing to coilovers late summer)
The fronts are 8" and fitted with 235's although i'm feeling to change them to 225's or even 215's at a stretch (i'll have a test-fit before that)
Thanks
Owen

i know 8 up front and 9.5 rear will just fit as this is what i've bought for mine.

You will need 215 on the front unless your using a widearch kit. i'm using a 255 tyre on the back. i had 255 on a 8 width before and they sat perfectly.

I run 9J +35 ET and 255 wide 17's - fits "ok" but it does clout the arch lip acasionally :)

I've seen an aussi guy on the US boards have 285's on a set of 18's 9.5J's squeeze under the back end - cant remember the offsets though.
Small turbos - they're not big and they're not clever!

Just say NO to small turbos!

285's  That on a standard body? no lips or anything?

Man thats wide for standard.

Seen a few wide ones on the mr2oc but there sticking out past the arches which don't really count does it. lol

It was flupstar if you cruise the US boards. Old thread. This was with Tein HA's.

Dunno about the arches tho

reporting back as promised

With Tein HA's...

18x7.5" front, 225/35/18 rubber with a 38mm offset.. I have about 3mm to the front suspension and it is dead flush with the guard...

18x9.5 rear, 285/30/18 rubber with a 40mm offset... I have around 5-8mm to the suspension and the wheel exits the guard by around 2mm... with the bulging 285 tyre, it pokes out around 5mm... barely enough to be noticable.

A 42mm offset with a 275/30/18 tyre would be the absolute perfect fit..

Have a look at the wheels anyway.. so sweet..

A 255 wide street tire for 500 rwhp is not going to offer much traction.

I'm using a 265 road race tire and I could really use a lot more traction out back ... even when I was at the low 400s in power to the ground.

i don't think you'd get much traction at 500rwhp even if you were running tracks. :D

Must be nice to have so much power its like driving on ice at WOT. lol

Oh, one can dream =P~

Thanks for the replies guys,
i hope these will look and made the car drive ok.
Jeff,i've spoken to you many times in the past for advice etc,i'd love to think my t-top can get to the 10's in the 1/4,but looking at your spec to get to 11.1's i'm going to need a hell of a lot more!
hows is the drive now after the recent tuning too?

Owne, I went 11.1 with 440 rwhp. I suspect that 10s should not be an issue with my current set up if I can get it down the track.

We haven't been able to tune anything since the 567 rwhp pul because the clutch is not holding. We have a twin disk clutch to go in, but we are having some issues locating the papropriate hardware to bolt it in :(

As of now, I am just racing on what I got ... expect some really exciting hillclimb videos from this past weekend to be posted later tonight ;)

sorry mate just getting wheels to fit yur 500bhp is not even close. I've spent 1000's on my car and on 17's the only way i get to 500 is with the 100nos and that don't count

The only way to get traction is to re-design the suspension.

For e.g., the chap working on my car re-designed the suspension on a Mk2 escort with 550 odd HP with a dutch company called Reiger. Gets traction all day long...thats with 225 skinnys all around!

At £1500 a corner, plus other stuff...no chance, LOL!

I'd much rather put the money towards 4WD conversion

Hey Enis,
yes mate,i'm good,my car was MOT'd Yesterday and will be run in over the next few weeks towards the USC show before a final map.I'm hoping to run it as i have booked the time off to get there/race.
Hows the development on yours mate?
late summer,i'm investing in rear traction control bars, there are a few aids available from vendors on the US MR2 boards,i believe Jeff Fazio has two of the examples fitted,he runs 11.1's with only 440hp!i should break 10's yet!

Tim,

Did you run coilovers on that then, and did you need spacers? I'm asking because I'm trying to decide whether to go with 245's or 255's. I'm running 8.5's on the rear.
