Front panel behind front bumper rust

Post by jem »

I've just been having a good look round my newly aquired MK1b and noticed the metal panen behind the front bumper is rusting badly, and the towing eye feels like a loose tooth  It looks like the panel could be patched, but is it possible to buy the whole panel, cut out the old one and weld in the new (or does it bold in?)? Any idea of cost of this panel and how hard to change it is?

Thanks in advance =D>

Handy tip. Never, ever use teh towing eyes that are immediately below the front bumper.

Always use the transport hooks of which there are two that are attached to the chassis if you look under the front of the car. There is one either side.

I know that if I tried to use the towing eye on mine thats just below the bumper, it would be pulled clean off

Mr "T" Main dealers
another good tip is always ring Mr "T" for a price first then you will know whether that ebay item is a good buy or not, these bumper RF bars always seem to make £100.00 on ebay :?

Hi

Just replaced mine, go to the last few shots on here (page 4) and you will see the bumper bar fitted.

http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/880123

If you start the job, expect LOTS of snapping of bolts as there are loads of M6 nuts that may all be well and truly rusted into position. You may want to budget for some of the various steel brackets that have threads attached to hold the various pieces of the front of the car together, as once you take everything apart you may feel these should be replaced as they will be rusty too.

I could have actually re-used my bumper bar, I just felt it was not worth repairing it and went and bought a new one.

Cheers

Nice job Peter... glad to see your keeping up with your White and Red colour scheme!

You can always sell any old bits you've replaced (if they're not too bad), effectively discounting your new parts.

Cheers,
Jon

Thats good advice - I remember when I replaced my front wings that the threaded bracket that locate the bumper just snapped clean off! None of the brackets in question (front or rear bumperwise) are expensive, my advice is get them in advance before starting as if you need them (and 9/10 times you will) - they require ordering.
