Petrol Leaking from Filler

Post by coverco »

I recently purchased my first Mk1 and am very impressed so far. I have sorted out quite a few faults but am stumped with this one. After driving my car fairly hard I stopped and got out, there was a strong smell of petrol. I went round to the passenger side to find petrol had poured out of the filler neck. I have checked the tank vent on the rear chassis rail and it does not seem to be blocked, I was wondering whether I have a dodgy petrol cap? It is a locking cap and seems to be fairly tight, any ideas?

MK1s do not have a locking cap. There is no need because the flap locks.

get an OEM petrol cap.

MrT is best bet.. just get a new one.

I have one sat in my garage that you can have if you'd like.

Blimey, thanks for the quick response! I suspected that the locking cap was not standard as there is one for sale on Ebay that obviously just twists on. If I could have the one in your garage I would appreciate it, I am willing to pay for it and the postage, let me know how much and I will send you cheque. Thanks.
