Tyre recommendations for a MK1b

Post by jsheathcote »

I have just picked up my Mk1b and twice on the way home almost span it. Once home I took a look at the rear rubber. Tread depth fine but some brand I have never heard of - TIGAR. No feed back what-so-ever from the tyres until they totally lose grip in the damp conditions we had today.

My guess is that these are some cheap budget rubber.

What do you suggest as replacements, and what sort of price am I looking at?

TIGAR are TDFs (Taiwanese Ditch Finders) and are absolutely useless.

For stock rims:
eagle F1s for road use only. Really good especially in wet. Don't take them on track though.

bridgestone RE720s a good budget alternative.

track tyre & road use- A539. mediocre grip but nice and progressive, my choice in my NA.

for 15s (195/50/15s):

F1s- again for road use only
SO3s - good for road and track
budget option- A539.

Uberswan option and quite frankly best road/track tyre since sliced bread:
Yoko Advan Neova (LTS- for elise S1) thes eworked fantastically well on my old SC.

RE720s or A539s can be had for £34 per tyre on mytyres.com

I recently got some new tyres fitted to my 1a as I was told A539 are becoming difficult to get hold of due to discontinuation of them... :?:

I also then found out that Toyo don't make T1's in stock sizes #-o

I wasn't about to fork out for Goodyear F1's as my stock wheels will be used for track use as of next year and my day to day wheels will be something in 15"

So I went with the fitters recomendation of BF Goodrich directional tyres. The compound is not as soft as F1's or T1-S's, but still softer than some. So far both dry, damp and wet handling is pretty fri88ing good. But for some reason keep having this re-ocuring nightmare about rubber peeling away... (no joke) 8-[

Was looking at prices yesterday, no probs finding A539s. Goodrich Profiler G are not too bad a tyre.

I've got RE720s on the back of my daily driver mk1b. Cheap at £32 each. fitted/balanced.

These seem to be quite hardwearing and the grip in the wet is OK.

They are also nice and forgiving if you like tail out powerslides in the dry.

The grip in the dry is not as good as the continental tyres on my other mk1b but the RE720s are more FUN and more forgiving.

They are also quite quiet.

My rear tyres let go today on a dry road, without warning, mind you I was cornering hard ish, but they just suddenly let go and surprised me! They are made by Federal and are brand new, fitted to my stock rear wheels. The fronts are made by Stunner and were on the car when I bought it.

Probably fall under the catogory described by Lauren as TDF's ha ha

I went all over today trying yo find Eagles but no-one stocked Goodyears :( so the best option I had was Pirelli P6000. Either way there will be far better than the crud I had on before so I'll let you know how there fair.

Eagles are still fitted to the front and have plenty of live left in them.

While the tyres were off I took advantage of the car being up on the lft and checked out the underside. All looks very clean with the only exception being the edges of the sill lip near the rear wheels - the edges are starting to rust but nothing to worry about in the near future.

Also noticed that the nearside damper has a leak. I feel a new thread coming on :)

I got Goodyear F1's on all round after being advised by other member’s on here and as yet have not managed to unstick the car from the road. Which is great since it got me out of a nasty moment when I went too fast around a corner? :pale:

I would go with what Lauren has said,re720's where great on my old car that Lauren bought.
I now have f1's that seem to be fantastic for road use,wet and dry!
I would say,go for f1's if you can afford them but re720's are a great, slightly cheaper tyre!!

I had some Pirelli P600 and P6000 on my mk1b NA when I got it. Had a very lairy moment where I spun the car 180deg and hopped over a kerb onto a grass verge sideways - the front tyre sidewall took pretty much all of the impact with the kerb since you could actually see the metal reinforcing strips bulging out of the side afterwards

Anyway, I think the P600s were pretty lousy and the P6000 not much better. Admittedly the spin was my own fault but the grip was always pretty bad in the wet with the Pirellis so I changed them for Goodyears. I had trouble finding somewhere that did Eagle F1s but ended up with so Goodyear NCT5 tyres instead and they seemed to be much better to me.

My current mk1 has new Dunlops on it but I've not actually got to drive it out in the wet yet so have no idea how well they will perform...

Why buy new tyres, when for a few more pounds you can have this lot:

A set of brand new, never used Speedline Chronos 16 inch by 7inch with Toyo Proxes T1-S 195/45/R16 tyres. Fitted with stainless steel racing valves and even come complete with a set of Speedline wheel nuts. They are all new, only ever fitted one to see what my (now abandoned) Mk1 project car would look like with them. These cost me £750, but I am willing to let them go for £400 as they are no good to me anymore and must go!

Kind regards
Andrew

Possibly because an otherwise standard mk1 would be really overtyred with those tyres on.. imho :)

Also it only costs just over £200 for 4 F1's fitted. #-o

Has anyone tried Perelli PZero's?

I don't know anyone on the Jap scene that rates Perelli at all, but why then do 90% of Ferrari owners/enthusiasts use the PZero's? Just a thought...

An alternative (available from mytyres) is the Toyo CF-1, they're cheap and pretty soft compound. If it's anything like the T1-S they'll be alright, haven't tried them myself, you'd have to ask Malcom (Tiamat) as he's got them on his 2.
