[Mk2] [NA] I’m an idiot.

Post by punkrockscreech »

Afternoon all, been a while since I've been on here.
I may (I did) have reinstalled the battery the wrong way, I've given myself a talking to so don't need to be told I'm stupid again, thanks!

Any way, I blew the dome fuse and have replaced it but still My tacho, battery meter and temp gauge dials are not working. Central locking and heater controls aren't working / lighting up either. The battery light is also constantly on.

Where should I be looking please guys?

Any help is welcome.

It's a 98 Rev 5 if that helps at all.

Cheers.

Hi,

Does the engine start/running normally?

You may have blew number of control units. Some might have reverse voltage protection built in by the means of a diode, so could be repairable.

Have you checked ALL the fuses?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

The engine starts and idles fine.
As far as I can see the all the fuses are ok.

Not being electrically minded is this more a job for my local garage?

Cheers.

That's good news, at least the main ecu, igniter etc didn't suffer damage.

Hopefully your A/C amplifier control box is working fine (located under the dash-passenger footwell) as that controls the radiator cooling fans if your car has A/C. You don't need an overheating on top of all this.

I would check every single fuse with a multimeter or visually by pulling them out. Even the big ones in the frunk.

If your charging light is still ON after this, the alternators voltage regulator or/and diode array might be blown...

Your local garage may not open the control boxes and poke around with a multimeter. If they would, it would be very expensive.
Checking components with multimeter is easy, there are tutorials all around the net. However, this may not all be necessary.

Check all the fuses. Than if not sorted, I would bring the car to a car electrician. He could quickly determine if you alternator etc is blown.

Many control boxes are available from breakers for pretty cheap, so it might be cheaper to get used units instead of get them repaired. IF required at all.

Should you get to a point where you actually need a few parts, this will help:

Thank you again for the prompt response, appreciated.
I shall check all the fuses and go from there.

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers.

Hi Brian.

The cars currently at the garage just down the road, they suspect it's the voltage regulator too, the alternator is a bit anyway so I'm going to get a new fitted too. I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers.
