[Mk2] [Turbo] Turbo choices

Post by MR2TRD8 »

I'm currently running a gt35r turbo and I'm looking to swap to something which spools faster so I have less lag and power coming in at lower rpm.

Has anyone used the Garrett g25 550 or g25 660 and does anyone have any power graphs of these on a 3sgte? Any other turbos I need to be looking at?

The G25-660 is probably what you want if you want to get close to 500hp+, and it will spool earlier than your GT3582.
The G25-550 will spool even earlier again, but you may struggle to flow more than 400 - 440hp at the flywheel.
Depends what you want....if it's bigger power, then maybe the G30-660!

Look at Shane34's posts. He got 570hp @ 1.9 bar I think. Wicked turbo for the money.

That is impressive flow for that size turbine wheel, no doubt spraying methanol helped keep EGTs in check, I'm kind of considering the smaller compressor wheel option...the low-mid range grunt makes for a weapon of a street car :-)

The g25 660 was a good turbo. Small ar would have saved 300 rpm maybe. Egt were fine even without meth at 1.6bar 440 whp. Circa 700 degrees.

I would expect to see 1.9 bar at 4500 but to be honest I think you would kill something or run into problems with the torque being in so fast.

Progressive boost on the g25 was fun. 4k rpm rev range of boost.

I dunno- I'm on full boost by 2.5k rpm with the current turbo and it's huge fun to drive, only issue is I can't flow more than 1.4bar boost through it, so tops out at 380hp. Plenty enough for spirited driving, but it would be nice to see closer to 450hp....I just dont want to sacrifice the low down grunt.

I'm done with the big power thing for now...it's fun enough in a 2, but it gets old fast. The cars been so much better on the smaller turbo- and I'm pretty sure it's faster round the twisties now. I do miss those 2.5bar pulls....although my cracked block doesn't :eye:

Turbo choices

Post by MR2TRD8 »

I'm not really chasing power big power numbers just after a more responsive car so I can actually drive it faster if that makes sense. I'd be happy with 420 ish as long as it spooled fast.

I'm really interested in that g25 550, is there an equivalent Borg Warner turbo? Also am I right in saying I would make more torque on the g25 550 over the 660 as it would be running more boost lower down or is it the other way round?

Thanks for all the advice
