Forged engine block

Post by Adam86 »

Unfortunately I believe the block to be cracked.

Covered 2500 - 3000 miles since complete rebuild with the following parts
86mm Forged Wosner pistions 8.0-1
ACL bearings throughout
New cam belt and bearings
New oil and water pump
New gaskets and seals throughout

Asking for £500 which is less than the pistons alone cost. With the oil and water pumps removed I'll take £400.

I also have a rev2 block with 86mm bores to suit the wosner pistons as I was going to re-block the engine before I decided to go with a caldina 3sgte.

Rev2 block £100 if sold with the engine.

Holy cap :-( mind letting me know where it cracked? Was it a rev 2 or 3 block?

Great price though, that'll sell very quickly.

It's a Rev3 block mate I don't know where the crack is but the head passed the pressure test and the head gasket was fine.

The engine was pressurising the coolant eventually leading to overheating when on boost so the classic sign of a cracked block. Could drive around normally all day long with no issues.

Are you sure you were not getting head lift?

I'd want to be sure before letting that engine go. Cracks are normally quite evident, but some hairline ones can be hard to see. Just be sure before you loose out.

Always a possibility but the head was bolted down with arp bolts and the torque was checked before the engine was opened up.

Fair point, it's probably worth investing a few quid in a dye penetrant kit and confirming it

I have built a few engines over the last 14 years for the mr2, even with arps you can get a premature head gasket failure or leakage that isnt always noticable when removing the head.

I am actually waiting for a new gasket for my engine as it is leaking coolant into cylinder one very slowly, i had to use a borescope and time lapse it while highly pressurising the coolant system to find it before i pulled the engine out as i wanted to be sure of the issue first.]

And this engine is running L19 head studs at 70lb/ft, first premature headgasket failure ive had and have no idea why, maybe some contamination or something but very unusual, i did think it was a cracked cylinder at first as issues only happened after a few pulls at high boost.

This is at 650hp 490ft/lb 2 bar boost

Did you lose water level when running?

Yes eventually if I kept using boost. That would then lead to an airlock and the water temperature shooting up and steam filling my rear view.

I'm gonna ask a stupid question but did you retorque the ARP's after a heat cycle? ARP recommend doing this.

i was having this problem with pressuring coolant system under boost turned out mine was head lift even with arp bolts only running about 20 psi lol,

new head gasket(just in case) retorqued all was fine

then went 5s
If you see an MR2 with a raised engine cover, the bottom line is it's probably faster than your car.

Just a quick bump before I invest in having the block rebuilt or parts split ready for sale.

Not wanting to be negative but I just dont get this add?

Your selling a forged block, but the blocks cracked,

Your selling ACL bearings but I would never re-use bearings especially if they have to go into another block.

Then you say this is less than the price of new pistons, well yes second hand pistons would most definitely be less than the price of new ones.

Gaskets & seals arnt really re-usable in a high performance engine

Genuine question am i missing something

By using my rods and crankshaft I thought that was obvious. You use my rev2 block.

Next time a pm would be polite.

But the block is knackered and needing replacing? So you couldnt use the block.

I sort of see what kenny is getting at.

Durrrrrr re-read his post. He was implying that he uses his SPARE REV2 block that he purchased to rebuild his engine.

Boy, has this turned into flame the seller post? LOL

Yes the current rev3 block is cracked not the Rev2 block that can come with the sale if you wish to use it.
