So an Aldi/Lidl special compressor won't be up to the task?
Re: welcome to my basket case.
no. my old compressor is a compact charnwood and it has to work pretty hard to ge tthe job done. it can hold the pressure to do it but the pumps running constantly. my mates 3hp twin pump sealey compressor has about the same tank size as mine but with the more powerful motor it only runs about 60% of the time which is well within its duty cycle.
all in all ive needed a bigger compressor for ages....
ideally one of thses or similar so i can shotblast and run my air sander and die grinder etc withiout having to stop and wait for pressure to build up,
https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke- ... riven-air/
14cfm is overkill for spraying but bang on for shotblasting.

Re: welcome to my basket case.
oh and for spraying you REALLY need a water trap. theyre only about £15
Re: welcome to my basket case.
painted a load yesterday
unfortunately one wing really badly reacted and then i ran out of paint...
so still got this to do...
getting there slowly though.

Re: welcome to my basket case.
Lol @ "slowly"!
Can't wait to see a panel finished. What's involved in flatting back and polish? It looks quite matte at the moment (I'm a paint novice)

Re: welcome to my basket case.
let the paint go off properly for a couple of days then wet sand it with 1000grit wet and dry, when the surface is flat you machine polish it with g4 compound and then machine wax it.
that is if i can be bothered, if you just wax it you get a passable finish.
and dont forget your looking at the result of a lot of dust on every panel which settles on anything not actually being sprayed at that particular second.....

Re: welcome to my basket case.
if you look at them closely and they have a thin blue stripe on them then there the main cables that feed the rear fuse box and alternator in the engine bay
Re: welcome to my basket case.
Thought that might be it.
Was expecting it to be the alarm but I pulled all the fuses that that runs from and I only got a 0.06 drop so it seems thats ok.
Whoever changed the alternator on this in the past fitted what Id guess was a later unit. The problem is the wiring wasn't very well attached and I had to re do it, but I dont have the wiring diagram so I did it as best guess. So I suppose it could be that. Easy enough to find out, Ill just pull the alternator plug.
However its charging ok and the rev counter works and I cant see how I could get it wrong and still have it charge.
In other news. My garage is now passable it was a right tip before.....
And heres what it looks like in the daylight (covered in dust) I had to pull it out to clean the garage..
Note the area on the rear wing where I wiped the dust off, that is a 'gun' finish
My new suspension that I bought off a guy one here.
I had to re make the drop link mounts on the front as whoever did it did it so badly it fouled on the old mounting hardware, so a bit of cutting bending and welding later they fit, but I had to shorten the drop links as the mounting point is much lower. Im happy that Ive got 100% penetration so theyre not going to break, but as it happens a set of rear drop links would be the right length. I refuse to buy a pair though on account of the fact Ive only just bought the new front ones....
Ive lowered it to almost as low as it will go, just got to do a bit of levelling up but I have a feeling this might be a bit too low....
And yes I know I haven't locked it off yet... I of course will before driving it.
I want to get it setup so I can actually get over speed bumps but still lower than stock, so can someone with a setup that matches that description go out and measure from the ground to the jacking point on the sills? Give me something to aim for.
Sorry for the essay. Just had a lot to say lol

Re: welcome to my basket case.
If it helps usually 20-25mm lower than stock is a good compromise
Re: welcome to my basket case.
sorry guys its been a few days...
ive had most of this week working silly hours so ive not had any time for the car.
ive gotten the doors sprayed the engine cover and boot are also done and i had another go at the wing, there is just something about it that is stopping the paint sticking. im going to strip it back to bare metal ive had enough.

oh and i received a letter from the dvla saying i should receive my V5 within 5 working days. so it should be properly road legal by friday

Re: welcome to my basket case.
Definitely body colour.
Go on, let's see a panel fully finished and polished as a teaser.....

black may look ok on the mirrors.
Re: welcome to my basket case.
ive decided to go body colour on the mirrors.
the annoying thing is i would have had plenty of paint if the bleeding wing hadnt reacted. but hey. another £30 of paint bought...
that takes the paint bill to nearly £300!!!!!!!
anywho.
started putting it back together today.
and ive taken the top 6 layers of paint off. im considering taking the last 4 off just to be safe... but im pretty sure it was only the top green layer that was the issue.
