[Mk2] [Turbo] Clutch making strange noises

Post by mr2nut123 »

When I reverse, that's when it makes the most noise. It sounds like a slipping/whine noise, and considerably louder if reversing up a slight incline when under a bit more load. This was the only issue at first so I thought nothing of it.

Today, once warm, I noticed that after changing from 3rd to 4th gear, it was making a slightly higher pitched whine noise at around mid position on the clutch pedal, just as it was disengaging.

There is no slip even in 5th gear at speed, so I don't think the noise is actually the clutch slipping. Any ideas?

Release bearing on the way out, perhaps?

Is there any way to check this or replace with axle stands, or is a clutch out jobby?

Gearbox out to replace release bearing I'm afraid.

I'll just keep driving until I get an issue then I guess. It's only a sound at this point, no slipping yet.

Is the figure of £300-400 for a new clutch and labour still about right?

I suggest a change of transmission oil - when was it last changed?

I'm not sure actually as I haven't had the car long. DIY job at home in the garage? Which oil is recommended for it?

Yeah, it's doable at home, just a drain plug and a fill plug. You can either use a hand pump to fill it (like this http://www.coleparmer.co.uk/Product/Han ... ed_id=3482) or use a tube and funnel.

Make sure you can undo the fill plug before you undo the drain plug!

A lot of people swear by MT90 for whatever reason, however I know plenty of people who used similar oils from other manufacturers (Castrol Syntrax for example) and they are just fine.

Looks like there's a nice video on YouTube showing you how to do it too.

Thing is, this sounds like a clutch plate squeal, so would changing this fluid really be related? :-k

Unlikely to be the oil, save the new oil for when the clutch is changed. Get new driveshaft seals too just in case. Pita when you get 95% done then realize you gotta take the shafts out again to replace em.

Definitely get new seals. They are very easy to damage when removing the driveshafts. They don't cost too much.

So do we reckon it's a part of the clutch then? There is zero slip in any gear even at full boost, just that weird noise occasionally when on the biting point.
