Standard or Modified (bodykits) ?

Post by craig »

The older I get and the more I look at my car, the more I wished the bodywork was standard.

I really like the look of a clean black MK2 on a nice set of wheels.

I'm quite tempted to (as my next project) remove all the bodykit and leave it looking like a clean oem rev 3 turbo on my 17" Enkeis.

Thoughts?

It's your car so get it the way you like it, personally a standard mr2 against one with a nice bodykit are like looking at different cars, saying that if I were to go standard it would definitely be a black one I did it with....

I think your car looks sweet as it is...

Saying that, If I had an escort of sierra cosworth I think they look better totally standard, don't figure #-o

At the end of the day a bodykit on an mr2 makes the car a head turner, one without makes it a nice example, so maybe it's an age thing :-k

It was only in September you were saying you preferred kits Craig!

Personally I still prefer some nice Jap body mods (Greddy skirts and spats, Aeroware lip and TRD spoiler for me), but also appreciate a nice well-kept stock body with a slight suspension drop and some cool wheels 8)

I think the problem we have here is Craig likes having something to do, he has completed his car then fancies new wheels, does that then he wants a twin exit, finishes that and needs something else to do  , Hence this post.... #-o

I'm in the exact position, while doing the engine been thinking about kits etc but now its done and polished up I actually like the stock rev3 look with standard alloys but think I may go for a set of wheels only to upgrade to bigger brakes, better tyres and see how I feel.

Defo agree with this, I have dropped the odd hint over the last 8 months but Craig seems happy with 300 bhp, even 50 on top of that is easily workable and will satisfy those modifying urges without downgrading the bodywork the car already has  Imo of course :eye:

There's a reason we are all fans of the Toyota MR2 and in the majority of cases that enthusiasm started with how they look…

There are many kits I like … a full on Toms for example is a great looking car but nonetheless ultimately now I think it's just gilding the lily. Maybe it is an age thing but after modding my last 2 from external appearance through suspension, noise and anything else I could to make my car different I now realise all these years later that the different ones now are the standard ones…

Personally I don't think you can't beat the look of a standard rev 1 or 2. Rectangular lights, contrasting rub strips and the best spoiler. They're starting to look beautifully classic…..

I'm more than happy with the car at 306bhp on the CT20b turbo. Not chasing big numbers or interested in different turbos lads. Just getting the best out of the stock Toyota set up. With the forged pistons, Power FC mapped by Ryan and strengthened, rebuilt CT20b, the car is quick enough for me.

Standard all the way.

It just looks right.

For a body kitted car to actually look good you need to spend serious coin on fitment, some quality wheels and rubber and suspension so it sits right.

A top condition standard car is always worth more than someone else's project as well if you want to move it on.

my only observation on the stock vs bodykit argument, is that the only cars that ever seem to really pull off the stock (or very lightly modified) bodywork and look really good are the ones that are on 16" wheels.

Very nice, i like that :thumleft: also you haven't got down the route of putting nasty aero wiper blades too. A big no-no for me, very classy 8)

A body kit can be ok, as long as it's not a failside.

The MR2 is a little shy and retiring in fully stock form. I think your choice is either attention grabbing kits or very subtle form improvements. I love a Toms kit still, but JimGTS's car for example is close to stock and looks sick. There are a few others too. They tend to be lowered on good wheels and maybe with a front lip, or some other subtle bits.

IMO your car's bodywork is a bit too aftermarket, just for me personally. But if you strip it off it will maybe be a bit too demure.
