[Mk2] [Turbo] Damaged conrod bore - opinions

Post by gnzyza »

Ok or not? will be taking them back to the machine shop tomorrow.

Can get finger in the score mark pictured, it goes round the bore and tapers into the edge. but deepest is the bit shown. I don't know if it's acceptable to use?

Rods have been honed following ARP bolts and are true and straight.

did it come back from the machine shop like that? I find that surprising as that really isn't what you'd expect.
no it's not really acceptable if that's the sort of finish they provide

Definitely happened at the machine shop. To be sure I checked the bearing that came out that rod and it's perfect. So I'm guessing it happened while they had it on the hone or something.

The post isn't meant to be slating the workmanship but to find out if they can be used? Any ideas, Its a mating surface for the bearing so won't moving, only thing I can think of it may cause a hot spot on the bearing?

I searched the net and can't find anything on this type of damage.

From the picture it doesn't look like it would effect how the engine performs, as said- it's on the face that mates to the back of the bearing shell- so should see no movement.

I'd be annoyed with the machine shop, and would probably seek a professional opinion to make sure it was ok...if not there are plenty of second hand stock rods around that you could replace it with and bill the machine shop for....my guess is that it's probably fine though :thumleft:

Thanks, I spoken to a few people about it and the general consensus is it shouldn't cause a problem. The machine shop assured me this also.

It is annoying and not the finish I expected but im willing to let it slide as mistakes do happen and it shouldn't be a issue. By the time you buy the hardware, resize the rods its just easier to get a set of eagles imo.

Onwards with the build :thumleft:

Also gutted as they came with my recommendation.
That's not the quality I'd expect from them at all.
I would agree that it won't have any detrimental effect but still its not what you wanna see.
Good luck with the build buddy.

Not your fault at all mate and to be fair they are a good outfit, and I would probably use them again :thumleft:
