Turbo Engine lid VS NA Engine lid weight

Post by craig »

Just for info (I was surprised by this!)

From this site:

http://mr2wiki.com/Main/MKIIWeightListing (in lbs)

engine deck lid plastic 14.5
engine deck lid metal 6

Turbo lid weighs 6.6KG
NA lid weighs 2.7KG

I'll be swapping my turbo lid out for an NA one me thinks!

only issue i can see craig is that toyota redesigned the lid for a purpose and i doubt it was just styling

Yeah, I did read on one website (can't remember which one, maybe MR2.com) that the vents on the turbo lid assist heat release out of the engine bay.

I'm really not sure. The turbo lid is basically inherited from the MK1 SC.

Would be interesting to see if has a function, or just copied from the MK1.

Mark Edwards, years ago was running 460bhp with an NA lid without issue.

hmmmm :-k

Interesting stuff, I suppose you could use a combination of a twin spal setup with the NA engine lid to aid with the hot air extraction?

Could this really be true?
Turbo engine lid is made from fiberglass (outer side) and NA is all made from metal I think.

You could, but I've never liked the idea of doing away with the protective rain tray.

Stock rain guard on the turbo is metal though, and apparently rather heavy.

Maybe in combination with a good turbo blanket and a couple of fans, but would the fans and associated bracket not then just add the weight back in?

Also, turbo lid looks better IMO. I used to think the NA lid looked better as I liked the flat deck but now I'm all turned on by details like raised vents

460? thats got to be a typo.
he never posted any dyno graphs in all the time he was on here aside from when he made about 330 at 1.5+bar.

i am a little confused by the engine lid numbers.

the NA lid is metal.
the turbo lid is FG

the turbo lid has an tray thats about 2kg, i know as i removed mine a while ago.

i cant believe without a tray the tubby engine lid would still weigh near double a metal NA lid!!!!

i should have weighed my lid when it was off #-o

I'm sure I saw 460 somewhere! hmmmm.

Regarding the weights, it seems a little far fetched to me in all honesty. The 2 different lids could do to be weighed to confirm.

Any volunteers? 8-[

I'll think you'll be surprised to find the NA lid ist lighter. The turbo lid is FG and needs extensive support not to break everytime you slam it down.
