Turbo Technics Rebuild/Upgrade thoughts?

Post by SteveH »

Anyone used any of their hybrid turbos? I've seen mixed things online

Considering their CT20 with some nice things inside

How much are they?
Im running the standard ct26 on mine rev 2 but im starting to find a bit of oil here and there so guessing its gonna need a rebuild soon.

Also i want more top end power so was looking at going for a ct20b or a hybrid.

I will watch this thread closely.

I was sold my mr2 with what I was told was a TT s148 hybrid. the invoice was in the folder of documents, I checked to see the larger inlet and none standard compressor wheel and also saw a non standard actuator so I had no reason to believe otherwise. Anyway I recently took it off and sent it to TT because it was smoking.

They have been really unhelpful and a bit rude when I've spoken to them. They've found plenty of wear and damaged seals and bearings etc but oddly claim it's a standard CT26. I have asked peoples opinions and compared photos to a standard one and it is clearly not standard. I try telling them this and the bloke on the phone really doesn't care - all they seem to want is my money so I'm gonna get them to send it back in bits and reassess my options.

They're probably worried you're expecting them to rebuild it for nothing under warranty or something, might explain why they're being funny with you. Either that or they're just a bunch of willys

That's the impression I been getting. They said "it's still got a ceramic shaft" which apparently means it can't be a hybrid... is that true? is it possible someone has just had the inlet enlarged, shoved a bigger compressor wheel on and fit a higher rated actuator? seems a bit bizarre...

A ceramic shaft eh....

The jdm ct26 had a ceramic turbine bonded to a steel shaft. The usdm ct26 had a inconel turbine bonded to a steel shaft.

My advice would be to get your turbo back asap and give the tt guys a couple of sheets of paper and some crayons.......maybe they're good at colouring

I can recommend Universal Turbos.

I had a CT20b turbo refurbished. In addition, I had a steel shaft and 360 degree thrust washer fitted for £612 all in, inc return carriage.

Yes we do and have replacment cores for the CT26 and working on complete new CT20b turbos.

You have to use wd40 over a number of days.
You will see there is a taper between the two joints, using a small sharp chisel keep going around tapping it into the joint and in the end it will come apart. I have broken one housing so far, so take care.

My actuator is in perfect condition, and works as it should. No need for an uprated one. I'm running 1.2 bar.
