[Mk2] [Turbo] Do turbos glow red often in normal road use?

Post by Jamitsi »

just wondering about this as , I know turbo do glow red when they get going.
but thought it would have been after a bit or a long hard run, some feisty driving.

does any one get theirs glowing red?
is the anything to be done to try and cool them easier?

Sounds like the ECU is retarding timing because of knock, that will make the turbo glow red hot

Never noticed during normal use, but did notice it glowing after the knock sensor caught me out once. Normal use I'd probably sway towards it shouldn't be glowing.

The heat coming off of it after a hard session is ridiculous, never really payed attention to it when I'm taking it easy though, so I could well be wrong. :)

well, I think the coil played up a bit, as it cut out , after a fiddle it started up again.
But if the coil was misfiring a bit, excess petrol going through, would create extra heat?
It didn't seem down on power due to ignition retarding, it was cold and was boosting well, and I had done some spirited driving just before it cut out.

I love wet cold weather and coils!
