RIP MR2 (potential resurrection..)

Post by CalMac »

Combination of wet road, budget tyres and high boost = doh.

Not really sure how I managed to lose it on a straight road but pretty sure the tyres played a major role. I'd just saved up enough to buy some AD08's as well, and I've got Ohlins suspension arriving this week

Luckily nobody else involved :) and maybe now I can finish building my other MR2 haha

 *Sorry almighty MR2 for disrespecting you*

oh dear :( thats very sad. I learned from a near miss that these cars need good tyres and some serious wet road respect.

I literally NEVER use high boost when it's anything other than bone dry, it's just not worth it, the speed they can catch you out at is eyewatering, I feel for you buddy!! Get some pics up so we can see the horror :thumleft:

Having just forced myself to go and look in daylight, it's not AS bad as it could've been.

Driver's side seems untouched.

The front bumper was ripped off (thank f*ck, it was horrible ). Aside from that, it'll need:

Bonnet
N/S front wing
Skirts
Sidelights
N/S headlight
Rear bumper
Whatever has broken to make the rear N/S wheel twist out like that :pale:
And possibly a new gearbox. Because it spewed it's contents out onto the road for some reason.. I have a spare

I've already got new suspension coming, and luckily spare wheels. Just a shame I had to take out the TE37's!

So could be fixed for within £500 I suppose :-k

I would say you would need more than that.

It really depends on how much you can do yourself.

But

New gearbox -- £250 / £300
Front Bumper -- £100
Wheels --- £****

Sorting out what ever is bent behind that wheel. it could very well have bent the chassis.

There are so many unknown factors.. but i'd budget a 1k.. If you're planning on replacing with another set of TE37's then could be nearer 2k..

I've got a spare box and wheels though, so wasn't including them :thumleft:

It'd be the ideal time to have her resprayed though if the body kit all needs changing and engine will have to come out for gearbox work..

How do I find out if the chassis is bent? I'm guessing I need to get it to an alignment place somehow

So sad, at least nobody was hurt

It is a shame we didn't live a bit closer, I have pretty much everything you would need to fix her up, car will be going to the scrapyard in the next 2 weeks so I would have happily donated most parts...

Good luck with whatever you decide anyway :thumleft:

Martin F, I'm guessing you're in Scotland

Came off a roundabout keeping the throttle steady in second, straightened up and then gave it a bootful  It kicked to the left, then I countered and spun 180 so that my front NS hit the central reservation wire barrier. Then the back followed and also hit the curb. I can't have been going more than 35mph, I was only 15m off the roundabout when I planted my foot and it spun straight up without going anywhere.

The roads outside Silverstone are always slippery though, my mate smashed his MX5 up there only a few months ago.

Honestly no idea why the back end kicked out, I'd have expected the tyres to just slip as I was facing straight up the road. Could it be something to do with my TRD diff?

sometime the worst thing you can do in these is try to counter correct it, it is pretty much instinctual to do so though, Looks fixable though man, just time and not a lot of money, at least it'll be off road for the winter. that rear wheel doesn't look to clever :(

Jack the back up (maybe not even jack) check the reason for the back wheel and if the chassis mounting is ok. You should have that up and running relatively cheaply in no time :thumleft:

Scary tale, I was close to brands hatch on sunday and had a similar event with the back kicking out and spinning up off a roundabout, but i luckily managed to recover it, much to the happiness of my passenger. My rears were on the markers and i replaced them today. Again, luckily as there was a huge downpour on the a13 on the way home. :clown:

Good luck getting her back on the road.

I also have a black bonnet you can have (in mk), it wasn't on the car at the time .

Good luck .
