Noob cleaning question

Apologies if this is a silly question but when you wash the car, how are you supposed to wash the engine bay lid without getting lots of soapy water in the engine?

a bit of soapy water wont hurt it :/, probably gets a lot worse in a rain storm, if that bothers you take it off only four bolts
