Just been catching up on your thread. I see my name mentioned a few times! Happy to help as always
Anyway the work has all been worth it as it has a very clean chassis for a Rev5. Well worth upgrading the engine in the future.
Thankfully now Henry's car has pretty much been replaced underneath his should be a lot easier to work on as well

Henry's car is a bloody nightmare! Haha. You having to cut the control arm bolt out of the subframe is quite something!
Cleaned the air filter:
The cleaning spray is crap though, don't even bother with it.
Been having some TB related issues recently - either ISCV or TPS. Got a spare TB from a friend, checked the calibration of the TPS and popped it on. Idle wasn't right with this TB - cold idle was too low (800-900RPM). Took it out for a test drive anyway, and had a rather scary failure:
On the face of it, nothing really scary about that - however the TPS was wedged against the engine hanger and had wedged the throttle partially open. The car accelerating by itself is rather alarming...
It was completely my fault, as the TPS test was all within range, I didn't need to calibrate it, and I didn't check the screws were tight. Lesson there is check everything, don't assume!
Turned out the ISCV on this spare TB was shot, and the TPS on my TB was shot. So, quick swap around of parts, and I now have a working TB again.
In other news, turns out my Rev5 wing was on setting 1. Obviously it needs to be on maximum attack full JDM spec setting 3:
I'm sure it'll make a huge difference....

You're gonna love that soooo much over the 3SGE!
Re: Gareth's 1999 Sonic Shadow Revision 5
Lets hope so, otherwise it's going to be a lot of work for nothing!
Re: Gareth's 1999 Sonic Shadow Revision 5
Little bit more done today. Just taking stuff off, nothing exciting! Box of bits is getting bigger :laughing
Not sure what coolant was put in it, but it wasn't right. It was yellow / green! Also a lot of deposits around the coolant tree and the water pump. While it's not a foolproof way of telling, green coolant is often silicate based coolant, whereas the red stuff is usually OAT, and the two should not mix. Not a massive issue, but given the build up around the water pump and coolant tree, I think it's going to be worth taking the head off and just checking the cooling galleries are clear. Much easier to do it now rather than in 6 months when it's in the car.

My sharp eye spotted a CT26 turbo there. Is it a hybrid or is that a rev 1/2 engine?
Re: Gareth's 1999 Sonic Shadow Revision 5
Gen3 with a CT26 hybrid. Apparently made 235bhp at the wheels, but there's no date on the print out so it could have been from before this turbo was put on. Also when it goes in my car it'll have a different downpipe, intercooler, and boost controller so it's not really relevant. It'll make whatever it makes, I'm not chasing numbers, I'm more interested in how it drives

Welcome to the turbo sonic club!
Re: Gareth's 1999 Sonic Shadow Revision 5
I had a CT26 hybrid on my Rev 3 turbo. Biggest compressor wheel that would fit in the housing.
I personally didn't like it. It was a bit laggy, so I sold it and had a freshly refurbished CT20b with steel shaft/wheel and 360 degree thrust washer. Feels great!
Having experienced a CT26 hybrid, I'd be interested to see what you think of it when it's on the car.

Here's the dyno graph (assuming it is with that turbo) -
doesn't really wake up til 2.5-3kRPM, pulls all the way to max RPM though.

FWIW all 'ct20b' turbos have a steel shaft and 360 degree thrust bearing.. its only the turbine wheel that's ceramic

I'm pretty sure it's a 270 item stock?

it's definitely a 360 degree bearing in a ct20, ct26 is 270 from pictures I've seen online, I've not had one of those apart to confirm myself though.

Fair do's, I stand corrected!
Re: Gareth's 1999 Sonic Shadow Revision 5
No progress too cold to work on the engine at the moment.
Car is on daily duties. Here it is 2 weeks after washing it with a jetwash in between to get the worst off:

Re: Gareth's 1999 Sonic Shadow Revision 5
Will you retire it of it's daily duties once it's got a turbo engine?
Re: Gareth's 1999 Sonic Shadow Revision 5
Absolutely not
I will be living closer to work though, so it will be used less for boring stuff.

Hardcore I loved my NAs for daily, not so much the turbo...I'm not really sure why, I think I just got old. Oh and I was scared of it rusting
