Horrific Clutch Judder

Post by StealthyGecko »

Hey folks got a bit of a weird problem, a couple of months ago I fitted a new Exedy clutch in my MR2 and all seemed to be going fine (aside from some other unrelated issues that I won't go into). However while driving to Japfest on Saturday the car was running beautifully on the motorway and then once I joined the queue for the car park the car develop a horrifying judder when setting off in first gear. It felt like when you don't get the biting point quite right but after the first time this happened I was extremely careful to make sure I was getting it right and in one or two cases was over revving slightly (and probably scaring the scooby owner in front of me)

Does anyone know what might be causing this judder? I've driven the car a couple of times since and it seems to be fine, it only seems to manifest itself after a long stint on the motorway.

Thanks in advance.

I trust you had your flywheel surface ground when fitting the clutch?

Engine mount/s loose?

I didn't, is this necessary? as when I had a fellow MR2 owner round to help me do the job the first time we didn't do this then either, also I was following this as a guide to replacing the clutch http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/know-your-2-know ... kbartid=13

The flywheel may need resurfacing if the old clutch was worn badly, slipping for a long time or even damaged. Below is a pick of the flywheel from my n/a.

You can see undulations and hot spot marks.

And below you can see it after resurfacing

Of course if the old flywheel is flat and unscored then resurfacing shouldn't be necessary.

Another thing to consider is the clutch fluid and slave cylinder. When you changed the clutch did you bleed out the slave cylinder? If there is old fluid it may have deteriorated (fluid is hydroscopic, absorbs water) or there may be a little air at the slave. Either way after prolonged drive the heat may affect the operation of the slave. When I fitted clutch I bled out my slave including laying under there and pushing the piston in by habd whilst opening the bleed nipple.

Let us know :thumleft:

Thanks for your reply, when I replaced the clutch the flywheel definitely looked okay, as in it didn't look like the one in your first photo but I think I will bear this in mind, but before taking the whole car apart again, I'd like to eliminate any other issues that anyone may think could be causing it :)

I did bleed the clutch, but I think I will give this another go tonight, I've also been told on mr2oc to double check all my engine mounts are tight too as I recently poly bushed the front and rear engine mounts so that's something else on the cars for this evening :) as I say the car was running fine on the clutch for a good couple of months and then only started doing this last weekend when the engine was up to temp which is whats confusing me :-k
