Opinions on first MR2 Turbo

Post by robd140 »

Hi Guys,

This is my first post, but I have seen quite a lot of you know your stuff and have first hand dealings with reputable MR2 Tuners.

I am in the market for a weekend car and wanted to buy a subtle but fast car. I have come across a MR2 turbo on eBay (Advertised for £6,995) which claims to have various parts upgraded and comes with forged internals, however I have read bad reviews about the seller on various owner forums.

Apologies but I cannot post URL's yet as it is my first post but the car is easily found on eBay (Yellow with Black carbon bonnet for £6,995).

What do you guys recommend? is it worth travelling a few hours to see this car?

Your feedback would be appreciated.

I'm guessing you mean this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mr2-Rev3-GTS- ... 017wt_1171

On the face of it - it sounds good, although I would argue over priced.

However given where the seller is based...I personally wouldn't touch it with the shi$$y end of a really really long barge pole.

But that's just me!

That's the one.

I though the price was OTT, but he sent me a message saying the car's engine has only done 1k since it was built, so is pretty fresh.

According to comments regarding the seller he has known to lie on occasions and the only way to check internal components is to take the engine apart, which I wouldn't have a clue to do :-(

If you want subtle but fast i would go for a standard or lightly modded turbo, maybe even one from on here. You will get a really nice one less than £5k and if it is from here it will usually have a build thread so you know whats been happening with it.

Good luck with the search and welcome :thumleft:

you're in the market for a subtle weekend car and picked the least subtle mr2 on the market.

Personally, i wouldn't go near that, it's the complete opposite of what I'd be looking for.

You're best off looking for a stock or mildly tweaked rev3+ turbo for a third of what that yellow one is up for.

I'd go off popular opinion on this one. There's good honest cars with checkable history around.

I probably should have been more specific.

In terms of subtle I am looking for a fairly standard styled car (bodykits which look fairly standard are welcome), however in terms of engine performance, I am looking for a forged engine with the potential to go beyond 500bhp as i would like to get back into a few track days.

The one on ebay looked good on paper, but I wanted to change the inter-cooler to boot mounted, upgrade injectors from 800cc to top feed 1000cc, upgrade fuel pump, add a Greddy GT3086r turbo and remap the stand alone ECU.

Any cars on hear that have a similar spec and are for sell I would be interested

Why not buy a car that is fairly standard as a starting block?

You're saying "I wanted to change the inter-cooler to boot mounted, upgrade injectors from 800cc to top feed 1000cc, upgrade fuel pump, add a Greddy GT3086r turbo and remap the stand alone ECU" so why bother spending that on a car thats already been tweaked around.

You can probably pick up a reasonably standard MK2 Turbo and put in the forged internals yourself (then you know its done properly) (and by yourself I mean yourself or a garage) and also do all the other bits while the engine is out the car.

I think you'd probably save a hell of a lot of money.

+1

Do it yourself- at least you know it's done right then, especially if you want to run 500hp+ :thumleft:

Cheers for the advice guys.

I think you are right.

The search for a clean fairly standard rev3 will begin :-)

Car is being sold by a guy called Xxxx.

He normally builds 2600 megatron power cars detuned to a few hundred hp for safety.

Suggest you run the search button and make your own mind up.

They're only the 2600 megatrons if you put the AA batteries in, if you stick with the AAA they're a more manageable 1300 megatrons!! :thumleft:
