[Mk2] [NA] Electrics are dead!

Post by weasilfreak »

I cant understand it - my car was working fine on Friday and from then on, the only electrics that work are the headlights, tails lights, stop lights and stereo. i have checked all the fuses and they are fine but wipers, indicators, warning lights, heater, windows, instrument binnacle and PAS are all as dead as a dodo. They briefly worked yesterday when i took it to a mechanics place (where it is today) but only for a second or two. What should i ask him to be looking at?? Car runs fine other than that!

Cheers

someone more knowledgeable will be along but I'd be considering the battery and the alternator. Although as the car is running and as the problem is so specific to certain items, it might be one 'circuit' that's causing the issue, if the fuses are OK you might have a bad earth somewhere?? just guessing, electrics can be hard to diagnose.

Is there anything you tinkered with recently?

Halfords do a free battery check btw

Thanks for the feedback - i will ask him to check the earthing straps and the alternator as the battery is pretty new. I havent done anything with the car for ages, at least not with electrics. I had to have a new ignition barrel fitted for the MoT - could that be a possible suspect?

Cheers

Do the emergency lights work? Looking at the parts that still work- they are mainly supplied by permanent live (I think), so this might be a problem with your ignition switch (i.e. you are not getting a switched live to come on)?

EDIT: actually do the stop lights normally work with the ignition off? :-k

Maybe a red-herring, not got the wiring diagrams with me (I'm at work)...sorry!

Useful diagram:

I'd be looking to see which systems do still work, and see if that gives you a clue...for example do the interior lights still come on?

I reckon you've got a an issue in the ignition circuit- bad switch, broken wire, connector, etc...that's where I'd start I reckon :-k

Thanks for all the advice guys, much appreciated. Turns out it was the immobilizer that was playing up - everything works perfectly except the passenger now doesnt open - another little challenge to sort! Cheers, Al

A surgeon's knife will probably sort that out... although that depends which bit of the passenger you want to open up?

Ooops, I meant the passenger door! I think my girlfriend might object to being sliced open!

Got exactly the same problem here.. seems to me that there is some kind
of relation to outside temperatures/heat... checked nearly all wires, fuses etc but have no clue of how to fix it...

got a '91 so theres no immobilizer...

This is not difficult to diagnose, but it might help if you give us details.

Does the engine crank?
Do any electric work?
