Random fuel cap question

Post by Davsurfa »

I've had my car for a while now, and I just thought the fuel cap idea was either standard as an MR2 thing or maybe a JDM thing. But apparently not, I've met two other '2 owners who have "regular" fuel caps.
This is what I mean with mine

The plus side is I don't have to remove the cap to fill up. Just to kill my curiosity, is this a normal cap?

No it's a JDM thing.

I suspect it should have been removed on import and replaced with one that comforms to Construction & Use Regs.

To be honest I did wonder, in the event of a crash, how it would stop fuel from just flowing straight out??

Although having never really noticed the writing on it, there is a UK phone number and company on it. I'm just curious how it's a JDM thing?

I think it's one of the aftermarket caps the petrol nozzle will fit in the hole but diesels a fatter nozzle and won't fit so you don't put the wrong fuel in

OK, i may be mistaken. I was under the impression that fuel caps in the EU must be of the "normal" type, i.e. screw on or the "flip" type like some classic cars and motorbikes use.

Does it not have a non return valve like new Ford fueling systems?

i had one of those on my import and as matt-mr2 says it prevents you fitting the wrong hose into the tank nozzle. Mine failed the MOT last yr as the spring inside the cap didn't hold the flap closed so in effect the tank was venting past the filler cap. Not great!
