Speed sensor and handling.

Post by Scott Barton »

Had an epiphany moment driving today..... my speedo clock has not worked for some time, tried swapping the clock but its actually the speedo sensor in the gear box, I have one, just not got round to fitting it....
Anyway....i have noticed last few weeks handling has been at best described as 'edgy' and 'twitchy', especially at high speed and acceleration...and then i thought...could that be down to the speed sensor?? Does it inhibit the power steering pump at speed?
Logic tells me it does, so that the steering stiffens at speed....am i correct in my assumption?

Yep- the power steering gives less assistance at higher speeds, without the wheel speed signal to the power steering ecu you would have full power steering assistance at all speeds...or as you say: edgy handling at higher speeds :thumleft:

Just get your spanners out Scott (actually, one socket). You've had that sensor at least 2 weeks! Image

Bearing in mind the car will need jacking up and securing etc., I'd say 20-30 mins max.

I swapped mine over on my drive, most useful tools I found was the girlfriends makeup mirror and a head torch. Prepare for scuffed wrists and to lose a knuckle or two
