First Mr2 Turbo moment

Post by Mr Bognor »

I had my first real moment where the back end lost traction last night .

Its my first RWD and on a straight road using 3rd the back end lost traction and had to catch it .

Thinking about it the road was not wet but more damp with the cold weather we have had and I should have thought about this .

Scary tho and even more respect for the car now

stay off boost completely in the wet mate, i have my controller on low boost pretty much all the time unless high boost is required :thumleft:

Very easy to lose it on damp roads if boosting

Glad you kept control but she needs gentle touches during winter :thumleft:

I bet you're on summer tyres... but given the cold temperatures they won't be working particularly well even when the road is bone dry. Below 7°C summer tyre compounds don't grip very well, hence why an increasing number of people in the UK are using winter tyres when the weather gets cold like this. I can feel the slipperiness on both my cars when they're on normal summer tyres (Falken 452s on the SW20 and UniRoyal RainExperts on my E46). Swapping to my Goodyear Ultragrip 8s givens a night-and-day improvement on the BMW... the MR2 is just driven less and treated with more even respect given even decent summer tyres become ditchfinders at this time of year.

Since I had a scare a few weeks ago I just take it easy if I'm using the car,or just take the van instead. I was caught out the same as you,the road only seemed damp but was very slippery!

Yes this was a foot down 3rd gear 2.5K on boost loss of grip .

The tyres are Falken 452s as well .

So any damp / cold conditions its very easy throttle I guess

pha!

wont catch me not boosting in this weather.

just need to have a good eye on the road condition at all times (even when weather is dry).
not that i imagine most dont do this anyway.

these sort of instances are why the tubby is fun and not boring

+1

I wouldn't say the cars are that bad in this weather and I wouldn't avoid boost completely by any stretch of the imagination. But you just need to factor in the loss of grip due to temperature. Just because it's dry doesn't mean your tyres will provide the same grip in the winter as the summer!

^^^ Yup

Most sports tyres start to go off below 4c.

Get some AD08s on there, they stay sticky in cold temps. The last winter I had the car I had those tyres on, so much better than anything else I'd used.

If it scares you then it usually means the car was out of your control. Good you caught it,most over correct. Get some car control sessions under your belt and it won't phase you.

What Luke said.

I picked mine up from PW almost a year ago after the turbo conversion.

Had a little run with Luke in the car just to check it was OK.

We 'might' of lit the back tyres up (wet and cold) coming out of a roundabout nearby

Cold air + heavy right foot x wet road = loss of grip/sideways action

Definitely the time of year, not to mention some greasy roads in places. Had the rears lit up a couple of times in the last few days. Styled one out in the centre of town today lol.
