So I have been chasing a misfire with my mr2 for a little while now and am all out of ideas! As some of you have seen I had the car breakdown last night and it turned out to be the coil pack. So take the car for a drive tonight and still has the same misfire as before no better at all.
So far I have changed the plugs, rotor arm and coil. Read the codes and it gave me 25 and 47 but I don't have the ecu light on at all.
Th misfire seems to be through most of the rev rang off boost it will miss if you lightly press the accelerator around 2-3k then if you put your foot down it goes until about 4k and the boost comes in. It's really starting to get me down and it's a shame as when it was running properly I was very happy with it. PLEASE someone help. Thanks,
Sam

Have you had a professional take a look at it? That would probably be your best bet! Could be something simple!

Cars can be trying at the best of times, can't they.
When I got mine it had a hesitation when accelerating, like you I got the plugs changed with the coil and rotor arm, I also got the leads changed as well just to make sure, mine was the coil had a split in it. Could try getting a set of new leads?

Please don't take offence, but this is what often happens when people guess instead of properly diagnosing.
I suggest you get the car to a specialist in MR2s. If it was in with me i'd be checking the O2 sensor and AFM.
Error code 25 is a running lean issue, and error code 47, IIRC, relates to the engine bay fan.

+1
Can't agree more, Peter sorted mine when I got it. I could have done a few of the jobs myself but the knowledge Peter (and other Mr2 gurus) have is invaluable and saves you money in the long term.

I will check the resistance on the leads tomorrow and Peter I understand what you are saying but money will not allow me to take it in to a specialist so far. It's really harsh as there is only so many things it could be.

You miss my points.
Toyota did a great job inventing a diagnosis system to assist in sorting problems. Why are you ignoring what the ECU is telling you?
As for money, i bet i, and a few other specialists would have diagnosed your problem within an hour. That's £40. How much have you spent so far?
I had one in week before last. Local garage changed his plugs, leads, cap, arm and coil at nearly £400. Still ran like a dog. Garage rang me, i took it in. Sorted in 15 minutes with change of AFM. Go figure.
Re: Seriously sick of the mr2 already. Still has a misfire and so fed up! FIXED!!
Luckily so far only the price of the coil which had definitely gone as the car totally cut out last night and the nice rac man let me borrow a coil to test with. The rest of the parts have been from my brothers garage.
I guess I will have to get it to someone when I can afford to. Just such a long way to someone.

You could try another ecu to rule that out.

Well I checked the codes again this morning and there wasn't any. Found that if I drive it without using wot the boost will work and it doesn't misfire however before it kicks in it feels like something is holding it back. Thinking on the problems started after I changed the boost pipes. Going to put the old ones on for another free "fix" as my time is not an issue.
Peter I would much rather someone with more experience look at it but for now it will have to wait. Might see if I can borrow someone's leads for half an hour to test this.

Thanks a lot peter, I'm not just guessing, had a similar problem with an mr2 that had no error codes and turned out to be the ecu. But please go ahead and condescend any time you like.

I think peters point is if the ecu is throwing a fault code for running lean then that should be the place to start, add to that the problem only seems to be at wot and full boost its a very good place to start.
You shouldn't need to refit your old pipes just check the new ones are all secure with no damage and you didn't disturb anything else when fitting them
Re: Seriously sick of the mr2 already. Still has a misfire and so fed up! FIXED!!
As far as I know, the ECU ignores the O2 at WOT so i'd be checking AFM tbh.

maybe the frustration comes from the fact that paying for another ecu(a guess solution!) Would cost about the same as getting a pro to have a look! I feel ure pain peter!

Please pardon my ignorance but what is "WOT"?

I once had a similar problem. It turned out to be a split hose between the AFM and turbo. Unfortunately I drove around it for a few miles too many and knackered the knock sensor too.
Check all your hoses mate.

I would sincerely hope OP has done this already.

Yes hoses have all been checked and clamps checked to make sure they are tight.
