Classic Car Insurance ??

Post by Ste2 »

More a request for feedback rather than the making of.

Who out there is insuring there Mk2 as a classic car :?:

I am on Admiral multi-car at the moment, which I have found to be the cheapest recognised insurer using using comparison websites + haggling....

...but I hear about people paying peanuts in comparison under classic car insurance and I am not sure that these 'niche' policies/companies appear in the comparison websites??

Car does less than 2000-3000 miles per year
I am 29 years old
Car can be garaged if required
Car is a 1996 UK (standard 2.0 NA) MK2
~ 5 years no claims
~ no points in last 3 yrs

I appreciate that there are probably a few threads on this but would be good to hear about any companies members have used for CC policies and what their experiences are.

Hoping any info offered can be of great help to other owners as I believe a car is typically qualified as a classic after 15-20 years so there will be more and more eligible MK2's over the next few years...

Cheers :thumleft:

I pay £230 through classic line for my Rev3 Turbo converted UK na and a spank load of modifications.

The car isn't garaged and is on a 3000 mile restriction.

I've 16 years NCB, no points.

Give them a call......

I pay 200 with performance direct, i was quoted 160 with a company called flux direct but i wasnt keen on some of the things, most classic companies dont use your ncb, performance direct do but only discount for 5 years. I'm 30 with a clean licence and 4 years ncb, i have a garage and live where there's not been any crime in about 30 years.

Tried this last year no one would insure my 95 car as a classic, they all just laughed at me down the phone when i said, Oldham, Manchester, modified...

However my circumstances have changed and now i only commute to the train station and back each day instead of a 30 mile a day trip.

Maybe i'll retry when my renewal is up in a few months. So possibly only 10 miles a day now...

Is it a second car for you? If so, you may struggle to find classic car cover.

Also, classic car policies can be fairly restrictive, do not rule out a limited mileage policy.

X 2 insurers affiliated with IMOC - see trader section.

Oldham and Bolton are becoming the worth areas in the UK for car insurance, especially modified and performance car insurance.

Perhaps not correct to compare classic car insurance Footman&James etc
to Classic Line who insure but not on a classic car ruling basis (losing no claims after a two year period) so classic does not necessarily have the same definition between company's.
How old does a car have to be to qualify for a classic car status?

There is no definitive age.

Yep - heard this before, some companies specifically exclude M, OL, BL and WA postcodes. #-o One (sky or flux, cant recall) didn't bother to call me back after spending 20 mins on the phone quoting all the details... kinda puts me off ringing these niche companies - hence the reason for the thread.

I'd love to see the stats/understand the real reason behind exclusions like this, sure, I would possibly expect these postcodes to be on the higher end of the crime risk comparative to the UK but its not like they are on the verge of Marshal Law either.

This is a 'second car' (I am insured on an 04 TOYOTA  Avensis that is the daily shed) but I don't commute via car so its only really 'second' by preference on space/fuel!

...so it is harder to get classic car insurance on a second car? That seems to contradict reason... but as we are talking insurance I wouldn't be at all surprised!

If one of the affiliates doesn't call you back then send them a PM.

A true classic car policy will need to be a second car policy.

Thanks. It was ages ago now - at least 3 yrs, may try again this time around and 'cut to the chase' on postcode eligibility.

Sky told me they wouldn't insure BL postcodes, which I fall under. I've always found Brentacre to be cheapest. They are a modified specialist and do try to beat quotes from rivals on a similar policy.

Must be, when people are quoting me £6000 with me being 31 and 5+ years NCB then im like, the car is only worth 2k u noobs!!!

Admiral coming in at £600 a year FC is the best for me and has been for 7 years regardless of car:/

And mine is my only car, my DD. Yes i know Shell Vpower very well.

I have my 95 Rev 3 insured on a Classic Policy, proviso was that I had to have access to another car (I do I have a Leon FR) and my mileage is limited to 5k (no probs).. based in Essex

Also not sure if it’s the same for all but I don’t earn any NCD on my Classic Policy, only my main policy, cost has hovered around £180 mark for past 4 years – mods are allowed.

This is helpful to the OP but not so helpful if you do not state who the insurer is :)

Don't earn any NCD on my Classic policy…
and after two years i believe the NCD becomes void which is the same situation as living abroad for a two year period, your NCD ceases to exist.
So Classic line policy's are normal, not classic in being a second car.

Some insurers can offer introductory discounts based on classic car experience and also if you have been driving out of the country. Both subject to claim free proof.
